Glad to be the first answering
Yeah of course its good. Even better for administrating and shit, but worse for games (you need emulators to play them), and designing - for example, you should use macromedia and adobe products with emulators, too, which kinda sucks.
Try fedora or mandrake, theyre neat for newbies. If you wanna jump right into the real linux, I recommend you slackware.
Good luck!

Well, Linux all depends on you and you system...

First of all make sure your PC is compatable with the Linux Distribution you choose.

Advantages:

Dependable, which is why it's popular in servers today.
Fast
Free unless you want the support.
Wide range of distributions to look into

disadvantages:

difficult to use..... depending on your skills
need Wine or other emulation software to run windows programs
HCL isn't as big

all i can think of right now.

back when i started i started with debian and gentoo, i think the other distos are too easy to use and you wont learn much from them. as far as a live CD goes, i alway though they were slow and didnt represent linux well. um id say get gentoo but read allot before you install it. plus IRC is great for help

Gentoo if you really want to LEARN what linux is all about as you install it.

You will learn more about the basics of linux on one gentoo install tehn you will installing redhat/mandrake/debian/etc 100 times.

You also might want to try the Knoppix LiveCD:

KNOPPIX is a bootable CD with a collection of GNU/Linux software, automatic hardware detection, and support for many graphics cards, sound cards, SCSI and USB devices and other peripherals. KNOPPIX can be used as a Linux demo, educational CD, rescue system, or adapted and used as a platform for commercial software product demos. It is not necessary to install anything on a hard disk. Due to on-the-fly decompression, the CD can have up to 2 GB of executable software installed on it.

The above is an extract from my fictional novel, "The random postings of Edame".

In the beginning was the word. And man could not handle the word, and the hearing of the word, and he asked God to take away his ears so that he might live in peace without having to hear words which might upset his equinamity or corrupt the unblemished purity of his conscience.

And God, hearing this desperate plea from His creation, wrinkled His mighty brow for a moment and then leaned down toward man, beckoning that he should come close so as to hear all that was about to be revealed to him.

"Fuck you," He whispered, and frowned upon the pathetic supplicant before retreating to His heavens.

I would go on to recommend MEPIS, which is a debian-based liveCD like Knoppix, but has a smoother installation process. I might be trying that one out myself soon.
