Treatment of migraine headaches with Psilocybin Mushrooms
    #13806167 -

I have read that some people have used Psilocybin Mushrooms in the treatment of cluster and migraine headaches. Has anybody experienced this firsthand?

Yeah, this is why I started to grow my own. I use them at least once a week to abort my migraines and sometimes more. I take caffeine and aspirin first but if that does not work then I pull out the shrooms.

I tried sumitriptan first which is closely related to psilocybin but I had severe allergic reactions to it. Psilocybin works great though and better than any prescription medication doctors have ever given me.

Do you suffer from migraine or cluster headaches or both?

My wife suffer from severe migraine headaches. She has been to many doctors and tried many treatments with little or no effect. The only drug that has temp. relief is the imigran injection. This has become hard to find and very costly in my country.

Do you use P.Cubensis and do you take them fresh or dry? What dosage would you recommend for a female with a body weight of 46kg?

I use psilocybe cubensis. I grow B+ but I have prints of others.

I take them dry and I put them into capsules which makes it easier for dosing and it means I don't have to put up with the horrible taste. It also makes them easier to carry around and it does not look as suspicious as carrying around bags of mushrooms. I store mine in an old supplement bottle and you can't tell the difference.

You need to play around with dosage to see what is right for your wife. I use a Cap M Quik device and size 000 caps. I normally take two capsules to abort a migraine. I weighed some capsules the other day after I made them and each weighed around 0.8 grams.

I use a food dehydrator to dry the mushrooms and I use a coffee/spice grinder to turn them into a powder for making capsules.

If you make a liquid culture from your spore print or spore syringe then your prints and spore syringes will go a lot further. Download this document for some liquid culture teks: http://shroomotopia.net/index.php?showtopic=8000

I started off making brown rice flour cakes (BRF) but you do not get as many mushrooms as you could using other methods. This is my favourite tek at the moment because the materials are easy to get and the method is easy too: http://www.shroomery.org/10858/How-to-do-Coir

I have started to take feverfew recently too to see if it helps reduce the frequency of my migraine attacks. I know others on this forum use it and they say it helps.

I get extreme reactions to fragrance and when exposed to perfume or after shave lotion, etc., I have an eye watering migraine the rest of the day until I get some sleep.  Mushrooms don't seem to help with this.

I also suffered from cluster headaches for years with no cure.  Psilocybe mushrooms do help prevent these, but I also noticed that since I started eating shiitake mushrooms with a meal at least three times a week, it's been nearly a year since I've had a cluster headache outbreak.  The cluster headaches were so bad they would drop me to my knees, and if I was driving, I'd have to get to the side of the road immediately until they stopped coming.

Perhaps the easiest way to get started so you can learn the life cycle of mushrooms and do it with the lowest cost is the brf tek.  You can get these going without a pressure cooker and they're also the fastest way to go from spores to fruits.

My wife`s symptoms are: daily headaches that will develop into a migraine within an hour if not treated. Sensitivity to light and sound. Nausea and sometimes vomiting. Extreme throbbing(usually unilateral). Burning of brain and neck area. Slight confusion and memory laps. Eyes watering and the feeling of eyes popping out. No aura.

My wife used to be be a competitive figure skater and are very sporty. Her migraines started when she was about 16 without the daily headaches. Her condition has gotten considerably worse over the pass few years. So far we have tried all preventative medication and diets but none worked.

I have just started cultivating Psilocybe mushrooms to treat her condition. I will post her treatment and results here.

One of the things you could consider a bonus is if you have to take psilocybin mushrooms very frequently then your tolerance builds up and you don't get as high or you might not even notice a high at all. I thought the high was pretty cool at first but as I got more and more migraines I kinda got sick of the high as I just wanted to get on with my day and be able to drive or work. However, being high for a few hours sure beats being in pain for as many as three or four days at a time.

I have some quality of life now even if what people in our position do isn't legal.

I have Cluster and Migraine headaches.  I have used mushrooms for years for my clusters with some success.  For my migraines I don't have much luck and some times after a dose my migraines are much worse for a few days.
There are many reports that say they help for migraines so I would say give them a try and keep trying different doses.
If you need help with dosing info or anything feel free to give me a pm.

For migraines I suggest you plant poppies in all your flower beds.  Five or six large pods in a cup of tea works wonders.  If you go with poppies, be sure to plant them all over the place, and especially keep them right out in the open so they don't look concealed.  If anyone asks, they came in a package of mixed flower seeds.

I also get migraines if I'm dehydrated, so drink plenty of water, but I'm sure you already know that.

I get acetaminophen with codine at the drug store.
Works wonders...they add a little caffeine but it's a good cocktail to kill a headache.

In Canada just ask at the counter.

In the U.S. I'm sure you'd have to grow poppies or something for the same effect.

Thank you for all the advice. I have read that a migraine is caused by a serotonin storm. Psilocybin are chemical called tryptamines, like neurotransmitters such as serotonin, they bind to nerves in the same way. Indeed, arguably the most effective migraine drug, sumatriptan (Imitrex, or Imigran), which can also abort CH attacks, is chemically very similar.

Our experiment will be done with the knowledge of a GP friend as he is also very interested in the outcome.
We will start with a small daily dose of 400mg of freshly preserved mushroom.

Very similar to my wife's story Nostic, she was a real good athlete like your Mr's and her migraine problem intensified aged 16.  I timed her around a track doing 800 and 1500 meter laps and she was only seconds of world record times and without even training for it, of course this gave her a headache.  If only we had known of this miracle mushroom cure!!! she would have had a much better stab at life.

Shes on daily dose of pizotifen -same as sumatripan.  Just after this christmas she tried doing without the pizotifen but didnt "feel right" she said.  I keep imploring her to take MORE psilocybin? it dont get real effective till 2g. but it really does work for my wife and she takes .5g of semilanceata every 2 weeks.

I am glad to get positive reports from people that has experience. I just wonder why it is not known or ignored by people in the medical field? It is well know that the best and safest treatment for ailments is produced by nature. If this works for my wife, In will probably become the biggest advocate for Psilocybin.

Well probably for the same reason cannabis is categorized as a substance with no medicinal uses in the US.  Because it's hard for pharmaceutical companies to convince you to buy their pills when you can easily produce a substance at home that works better.

One might also wonder why we (in the US at least) took a 40 year break from researching the use of psychedelics for treatment of various conditions even though most research I've seen shows nothing but promising results.

Yeah, it sucks how it's illegal. I was given various drugs that I had bad reactions to. I had a terrible reaction to sumitriptan which made me take a week off work (twice). I was given anti depressants which made my mouth dry, made me really tired and killed my sex drive. They didn't work either although I felt apathetic. However, the worst drug I was given was Topamax because it's got a black box warning that says it can cause suicidal thoughts. I had to wake up family members and get them to stay with me for a couple of nights until that shit wore off. The funny thing is that the neurologist and GP didn't approve of me taking psilocybin and they were shocked yet they give me a drug that makes me want to kill myself.

Stay away from Topaxmax! It can also make your skin separate from your body too = /

I can not stress enough how bad triptans are.  I was put on a daily dose also and it made things soooo much worse for me,  I was taking 8-10 injections a day(I should have died) because I was getting rebound headaches when it wore off.  Try to get your wife to stay off the triptans for a week and do a larger dose,  I completely understand it is hard to stay away from the triptan drugs because of the instant relief but it blocks most of the good affects of the mushrooms.

Yep CH HELL I know it!  Wife's been on pizotifen 20 years, it did fight her headaches though, but it also stupefied her too, made her sleep ridiculous hours and I guess that was part of the attraction because if your asleep you have escaped your headache misery.

You wouldn't believe what its been like all this time with this vile thing hanging over us as we tried to live our lives.  Its there all the time and sure enough I'm worrying about wife's condition constantly: yet I couldn't even talk about it to her, simply doing so would bring on an attack.  I didnt understand the kinds of effects she was experiencing: all I would see is wife periodically poleaxed by this thing at any moment in time and completely unpredictably.  I started getting auras myself (about 20 years ago, but strangely with no pain): mentioning it to wife or describing it was a No.NO. and I would be castigated for causing her to have an attack by making her think about her headaches!  I must say that 'aura' is grossly unpleasant, the blank holes in vision and zigzags are not aesthetic at all and are completely different to the beautiful visions seen during psycadelic intoxication.

There was a prescription drug called Methysergide that was based on some psycadelic chemical.  It did help fighting vascular headaches but unfortunately after six months it would start killing you with many nasty diseases as a side effect.  The medicine men should have continued with there research on tryptamine irrespective of the chances of little financial gain due to these substances being natural and already existing in nature.

Good luck with your wife's treatment Nostic, it will be interesting to see how it goes, I wish her similar success as my wife.

Hello everyone

Very happy to have found this discussion, in fact I registered especially so that I could make this post.  Can anyone follow up on what has already been said here?  I have suffered intense migraine for years and in desperation have recently( last 2 years) discovered this line of treatment.  I can say from experience that other psychedelics have been a massive help to me but have never been able to locate this particular organic version of the treatment.  I am interested in cultivating my own medicine so can anyone recommend particular strains to use?

Many thanks in advance for any help with this.

Cheers!

slowmo-joe we pick semilanceata each autumn, this particular mushroom grows wild here in the UK, but picking semilanceata is hard work, its also very expensive as it requires much costs buying fuel and driving many miles to the places where these mushrooms grow.

I'm in the middle of a (home grow) mushroom experiment myself this very moment, its quite legal to secure resources to do this in the UK  illogical its also punishable by being slung in jail as a deadly criminal if your actually caught combining these elements together and cooking (growing) something up that seemingly is very threatening to the powers that be ???

It involves ordering (via telephone) a mushroom grow kit and also ordering the exotic psilocybin species of mushroom spoors to grow with the kit.  So far it seems to be working, but its taking months, if we get 10 grams of mush from this exercise it can only be considered as a success because this will amount to mushrooms providing almost half a years worth of relief from migraine misery.

Thanks fantasticfungus for the reply.  If such a small sounding amount of this will last such a long time in terms of staying pain-free then it really does sound worthwhile.  When migraine hits I become so desperate that I will consider anything.  Interesting to note that I am not alone in suffering more at this time of year - around season's change.  Also for any other sufferers reading this who don't already know, energy drinks containing taurine can be a massive help.  I tend to drink the whole thing fast in one go.  Sometimes this is enough, sometimes it needs painkillers as well.  And sometimes as us migraine people know, nothing works but anything is worth a try.

Thanks again and very best wishes for a pain-free future...))

I always have taurine drinks in the house, both refrigerated and at room temperature.  If drunk in time it can put an end to an attack before it properly begins, sometimes.  I have attacks that can last days or longer and are completely resistant to all pain killers, so I am interested in the long lasting element of this treatment.  It does sound as if your wife has an effective programme and I am very happy for her, for you both.

Thanks CH HELL for the explanation.  I am guessing you are a cluster sufferer - knowing that the pain they bring can be so very bad I feel for you.

To update my post in this thread - when I joined and first posted I was very much in the migraine loop.  I ordered a myco box online (B+, thanks migraineur!) and by the time I had my first harvest I had gone out of migraine cycle.  In the meantime the box has given me a number of flushes, the first being the most generous, over a hundred in total.  The second gave me just twenty and the numbers have dropped with each subsequent flush, just now giving me two mushrooms on the fifth(!) flush.  Yesterday I had the first sign of going back into the loop by waking up with severe head pain.  I took a number of strong opioid pain killers throughout the day which didn't help with the pain.  I awoke this morning with the same pain and decided to try the mushroom treatment.  I had bought some digital scales in order to measure dose, so I weighed out half a gram of bone-dry mushrooms, put them in my morning cup of tea, drank it and waited.  I didn't eat the mushrooms but kept them and added them to my second cup of tea.  Sure enough within half an hour my head was clearing.  It is now two hours since waking up and I am completely pain free!  This is incredible.  I have had similar results using tiny amounts of LSD but it is not easy to find where I am.  There is a definite difference between this and HBW seeds - this feels slightly more refined and less "primitive" but just as effective, if not more so as I feel very able to now go about my day.  The HBW seeds made me lie down with quite a heavy body feeling and unable to do much but the mushrooms have made me feel light and able.  I don't know whether this dose is high or low but I have without doubt witnessed the effect I was hoping for.  I am yawning more than I might usually after three cups of tea but that is the only unusual thing right now.

I hope this information can be useful to someone and if anyone reading this has any comment to make or advice to give I will be very interested.  Equally I welcome questions.

Thanks to everyone who has so far contacted me on this subject.  So far, so good!

Cheers and have a great day

I'm curious.

Have any of you completely removed non-foods from your diet and still suffered from the headaches?

Non-foods as in chemicals, hydrogenated stuff, "natural flavors", artificial flavors, additions such as citric or other acids, dough enhancers, emulsifiers or basically anything man-made or highly processed by man.

The reason I ask is I've worked with a seizure patient who suffered from headaches.  The removal of all non-foods, plus changing their diet choices to the D'Adamo lists by their blood type, completely removed the headaches and drastically reduced the number of their seizures.

I'm interested in any similar responses from headache sufferers.

Peace

In my case the hard and fast answer to your question is no.  I have identified certain foods that have the potential to trigger an attack but that does not mean that they will, especially if only consumed on occasion.  I do go easy on the four "C"s - Coffee, Chocolate, Cheese and Citrus fruits, especially whilst in the loop.  I have also had strong suspicions about wheat but they were proved wrong when I eliminated wheat from my diet (surprisingly difficult to fully achieve) and still had attacks.  For a while I was blaming cigarette smoking for my pain but I quit cigarettes a few years ago and last year was my worst year for migraine.  I would be very interested to learn a little more about the practicalities of your non-food removal regime as it sounds as if it could be quite difficult to maintain, not to mention pricey?  Can you elaborate a little on the ease (or not) of achieving what you describe?  I have been treated by two neurologists, one of whom was familiar with psychedelic therapy.  They both told me that although sufferers tend to search for a cause, including diet, lifestyle etc, ultimately this is just my chemistry, my biology and that the best tactic is to accept that as a fact and find coping strategies - whatever works for me. Perhaps the best description offered to me was that these pains are "complex and mysterious brain events that medical science is yet to fully understand"...

Cheers and have a great day!

I've changed my diet. The only food trigger I have is alcohol. I can drink it but I can't drink as much as others otherwise it will induce a migraine. My main trigger is the weather. I can't cut that out of my life unless I live in a bubble = /

Re: Treatment of migraine headaches with Psilocybin Mushrooms [Re: migraineur]

All evidence I've come across points to 'migraines' being a common symptom of a huge number of possible issues.  Everyone reading up on it should pretty much agree on that.

Each person seems to have specific triggers, even some who have been unable to identify any at all.  The most difficult to determine are those that have a time-delay in them.

Eating food with no chems or highly processed stuff?  Expensive.  All the moderately to cheaply priced food is full of synthetic and highly modified ingredients. Learning what's ok, not ok and excellent for yourself takes time.  Cutting all those chemicals out of your diet is like quitting opiates or nicotine.

Making your own food because you don't have the cash to buy real food. That takes a lot of time.

The payoff?  Never felt better, slept better (or shorter) or performed better in my life.  It's like putting high-octane fuel in your car for the first time.

Every person I've run into that has health issues/challenges has significantly benefited from choosing their foods this way.

Considering the amount of pain and suffering I've watched people go through, I can't imagine not taking the time to at least try it for a few months.  I know some of those chemicals have a _significant_ impact on my mental function, even if that impact doesn't translate in to a migraine for me, others I don't think are so lucky.

Peace

Thanks, very interesting and definitely worth further investigation.  Clearly this isn't simply buying different food.  It impacts on both finances and time - precious commodities in the context of family life.  You rightly say that "migraines [are] a common symptom of a huge number of possible issues" and therein lies the problem.  As I stated before, it is a mystery and for some it can be impossible to identify the "possible issues", again and especially as you so rightly point out, when a time delay is a factor.  For most of us it comes down to the simple fact that in order to be a good spouse/parent/functioning member of society, priority number one is to be pain free and thus able to actually perform our various roles.  Above, migraineur says that the weather can be a major trigger and this not uncommon for us.  Atmospheric conditions can and do play a major role in migraine behaviour.  When The season's change comes around it is like I have an internal barometer which activates migraine.  My kingdom for a weather machine!

Thanks again for raising a very interesting and valid point.  I will make more research on this subject.

Cheers!

Exactly!  Anyone who's dealt with pain on a regular basis is too well aware of this. :frown:

Very interesting.

I have joint/back pain that used to respond to weather also.  Would you be interested to know that it stopped when I stopped eating artificial and highly processed foods?  I used to wake up in the morning and be able to tell if we had weather come in overnight, without looking outside first.  Can't do that anymore.

I'm hijacking this thread ;(

Peace

What you say about your own pain is very interesting and yes I will be looking deeper into what you say, especially foods by blood type, which I hear is common knowledge in Japan and other places.  Personally, my immediate priority is to be pain free as close to 100% of the time as possible and to (edit) NO longer have to take opioid pain killers and other such toxic medicines.

Incidentally, where I currently live there is no great culture of frozen and highly processed foods, unlike the UK which is where I am from.  So it may be that I am already some way toward cleaner or more food-like foods, simply by default.  I am replacing added sugar in tea with stevia, have hardly any dairy (there is a heavy love of soft white cheese here) and there are mineral springs nearby where local people can collect water for drinking.

Oh and I don't think you have really hijacked this thread - everything you are saying should be interesting  and of value to migraine sufferers.  When in the loop I become so desperate to be pain free that I welcome any suggestion.  I am definitely not alone in this.

Again, thanks, and have a great day!

Yeah.

The search for pain relief while pain is currently interrupting every thought or preventing any new ones from entering.  Leads one to entertain some weird/desperate ideas.

I'm surprised and delighted to hear that other places on the planet are already aware of food choices by blood type.  How wonderful.

Just thought I'd post this, since it's apparently relevant.
I've run into people who would swear they're choosing their foods by blood type.  They're not though.

Order a salad because it's all stuff for your blood type, right?  Then put on ranch dressing because the list says you can't have blue cheese.  Right?

Wrong.

The dressing is full of crap you're not supposed to eat.  That crap slows your body down and defeats the purpose of eating correct foods.

My wife eats ONE snicker's bar and she stops losing weight for 4-5 days.  Just one of the small ones.  That's how significant corn syrup and the other junk in that bar is for the B blood type.  Same thing happens any time you eat food you're not supposed to.

Remember, if it's not on the lists... it's either "not food" or it's a non-american food that's not listed yet (yes, the lists are extremely american centric at the moment).  Hydrogenated oils are NOT food.

Just to let people know.

Peace

Hello.  I am new to the forums, and found the forum because of this thread.

I am 37 and have been a migraine suffer since I was 7 years old.  I have had to pretty much adapt my lifestyle to migraines.  I have to watch my diet, exercise regularly, do yoga, follow a strict sleep schedule etc etc.  These are things that are good to do anyway, but in my case if I don't do them I am screwed.

My migraines have several causes, including some physical ones (neck problems).  So I also get chiro and massage on a regular basis.

I have been on every medication in the past you can imagine.  From opiates and triptans to abort migraines, to absolutely horrid daily medications like Topamax and Amitriptyline.  Some of these meds have done more damage than good.

I have recently began to look into an experiment with Psilocybin as a treatment.  I am trying to work out a dosing pattern at the moment.  I definitely have to look into growing my own though so I can find a better way to at least sort of reproduce the dosing.  As with others, I immediately tried the grinding an capsuling with the product I do have.  It seemed like the best place to start.

About all I can report so far is that I did have luck aborting one migraine with a capsule that likely contained about .5 grams.  I tried the same amount with another, but the headache was further in progress and did not have the same luck.  My hunch is a higher 'maintenance' dose, or finding the precise time to take them to act as an abortive are going to be the way to go.  I should be interesting.

Thanks for all the great info in the thread.

How are you getting on with your treatment torndownunit ? hoping its working well.

Best thing is to make a tea with your shrooms, a good way is to empty out a teabag - cutting a corner off it, and then charge it up with your ground up dry mushrooms, sew the hole back up with needle and thread, just bring it to the boil in half a cup of water and let it cool, be sure to squeeze out all the goodness, before you neck it.  Best advice on dosage is that the more you take the more effective it will combat the headache, 1g will give minimum psycadelic effects.  Use the medicine as often as you need too or resource allows, once a week seems to work well.  There's a prescription drug you can take daily that works really well its called sananogram, or pizotifen, I have found that this combined with a weekly dose of psilocybin works brilliant.
