Spawn sawdust different wood type than substrate for shiitake- ok?
    #13764296 -

Hello all,

First post here.. I want to grow shiitakes and I will be using hardwood wood pellets for spawn, via a tek I found here.. Since a person rarely knows which woods are actually in the pellets, my question is this... If I use these pellets for spawn (sawdust) to inoculate a substrate made of the same wood pellet sawdust and some hickory (for example- or oak, or alder, etc) smoking chips, is this ok? Or to put it easier, do I have to match the sawdust spawn to the growth substrate? I can only inoculate "oak" substrate with "oak" sawdust?

I only ask because both smoker woodchips and pellets are easy for me to get.. But if they have to "match" then I need to do something else.. Thank you for taking the time to answer.. I am very excited about this new hobby!

No they don't have to match.  In fact I've used softwood pellets mixed with hardwood sawdust and have had good results.

Using various woods has always been superior for me than using sawdust from only one species of tree.  In fact, I now have two Shiitake strains which fruit very well on Douglas fir, a conifer.  I just picked up ten tons of Douglas fir sawdust today from the mill.  I got it free since it's a waste product during the winter(they have a market for it right across the border in Canada during the summer).

I only had to pay my neighbor to haul it for me in his dump truck, which is cool.  All he asked for was five pounds of shiitake and reimbursement for the fuel he burned.
