wood based subrate

where do you all get wood chips fo your woodbased substrate? I've found smoking chips, but that seems a bit expensive for use as a substrate.

I use wood fuel pellets or animal bedding.

has to be aspen animal bedding, pine isnt good.


I havent used the fuel pellets, but those are definitely alot cheaper! do they work well raga?  :mushroom2:

I have tried pellet fuel substrate out with shiitake, enoki, pleurotus eryngii and hericium erinaceus and most of these strains colonize pellets fuel faster than WBS if used as spawn.
As far as I know most of our pellet fuel is made of softwood. But I guess the industrial drying process makes it more suitable for fungi than normal softwood.
The only problem is that the sawdust if very fine and therefore the air exchange is not very good inside the substrate. That is why I mix it with cardboard or/and animal bedding. But in my experience pellet fuel is much better then pure animal bedding.
In the book "Growing Mushrooms The Easy Way" by Rush Wayne the usage of pellets fuel is described very well. I have even seen people who do not sterilize the pellets fuel but only dissolve them in very hot water, let cool and inoculate with spawn.

Anyone have any info on the average lifespan of a small (three inch or less) wood chipper? I was thinking of getting one but I've heard they break down rather readily.

The pellets are real cheap and this is the time to get them.
5o pounds for 4 bucks will go a long way. And they expand a lot. But it would also be a good idea to add fresh wood chips to the sawdust to help keep the mushroom more vigorus and healthy.

I'm one of those who do not have a PC. Could you elaborate on this?
