On the Great Divide

How is it that "analytical" and "continental" traditions of philosophy meet and relate? Clearly it’s not as if the distinction were often expressed in head to head debate. Yet on the other hand, “head to head” is what is generally characterized here.

While this line of questioning usually ends at its juncture, I think it’s worth thinking about. Even if the differences are not ordinarily considered in debate, they certainly appear to exist in a humanistic or anthropological view of contemporary philosophy.

I took the general logic and critical reasoning classes at my university. But from there, I went on to study the existentialists and some eastern philosophy, so I am not very familiar with the analytical philosophers. I've recently become curious of what I've been missing out on, in analytical philosophy, and curiouser for its manner of representation. I would like to learn about Quine's philosophy of relative ontology. Maybe this yet unexplored territory is relevant to my concern here.

But for now, I am left wondering. Why is it, for instance, that at this forum, I will hear so much about Nietzsche and the existentialists, but never about Quine or any other "analytical" philosopher? Is it because authorial disposition is considered unimportant to analytical philosophy, such that it is mostly transparent in its ordinary expression? Is analytical philosophy a “textbook procedure" that flies under the radar?

Or is it, as I suspect, because this forum has a certain unspoken disposition for continental philosophy? If that would be the case, then why?

Because, frankly, it's far more boring.  Who wants to sit around and quibble over philosophy of language when we could be discussing the meaning of life?  :stoned:

I think the philosophy of language is far more interesting than the topic of "the meaning of life"--as far as I'm concerned, life is utterly meaningless, there's nothing to discuss. :shrug:

But it was the existentialists who concerned themselves with that lack of meaning. What is it that inspires you to concern yourself with neurosis, anxiety, and authenticity?

So what should assume precedence here: one person's sense of traditional values, or the rules of the philosophy forum that you break?

analytic is aight... i just loath laboring over symbolic logic problems and etc..... but thinkers like wittgenstein on language are pretty swell, etc etc - I never got too into the anglo tradition of that stuff - I can enjoy them just lately im into prose and poetry and story telling, I'll take the bullet points from the analytics methinks...

oh and it isn't as if nietzsche didnt have 'that side' to him...
