Either your friend had what sounds like a pretty bad trip, or that wasn't the right type of tea..

As for the difference in potency... I don't notice a difference, but I've seen plenty of people here make the claim that it is a less intense trip.

I will say that it seems to come on a bit faster  :smile:

I agree with Strumpling. Tea hits you harder, but fades quicker. You also face the risk of destroying some of the actives with the hot water.

This is a letter I send to a friend. I was trying to explain it to him.

Psilocybe Mushrooms

This dude was talking about tea and its positive aspects and he said a lot of things I didn't know. I'll try to sum it up in my own words.
First he said that making shroom tea reduces the dose by a little less than half the potency. But, since the psilocybin is all defused into the tea juice, your stomach doesn't have to digest it (chemicals can just go straight from the lining of you stomach/intestines to your bloodstream). So you get all the effect much faster and all at once, thus more visuals. Also the whole experience is shorter, due to the psilocybin lost in the heat during the tea making process.

When we eat the shroom whole, our stomachs have to digest the actual fruit mass of the mushroom before the psilocybin can be dispersed into the blood stream (much like a time released pill). This accounts for the time it takes for the trip to begin as well as the waves of intensity at the beginning. This also causes the experience to last longer because the trip is spread out, instead of all at once.

I would prefer not or make tea or cool aid partly because I feel uncomfortable destroying some of my mushroom's potency. But I have a better way to insure a stronger trip with less mushrooms. >You make the mushrooms into a powder by grinding or blendering them. You can get a faster digestion rate this way. It wont be quite as high as the tea but it would be close. Then put the powder into some ice-cream and milk in a blender. Ive heard you can disguise the taste 100% this way. You know, a milk shake!

Juice will NOT Kill any of the actives man, not unless you boil the mushrooms in it.

I highly recommend using any type of cold beverage like Juice or Kool Aid, and add a little lemon juice to it to make it a little more acidic, but not to do tea unless you boil it then let it cool to a luke warm and then add the mushrooms, plus a little lemon juice if you want.
I have only noticed a speedier onset with this method and have accounted for no loss in the duration of the trip, unless you add the time waiting for it to hit you :smirk:.

i hear ya man, i cant chew that shit to a pulp, too nasty. maybe if you did the honey thing (coat the shrooms with honey), that might help, never tried that though. i put mine in the coffee grinder till theyre powder and mix em with a double shot of orange juice, then chase that with fresh orange juice. its still nasty, but i think of it like some nasty ass whiskey, no pain, no gain.

If you do not enjoy the taste of the mushrooms maybe you should not be partaking of them! Part of the experience is being able to eat them. If you cannot "tolerate" the taste of them, maybe you are not ready for the experience. I love everything about magic mushrooms! including the taste!

I have done them both, and shroom tea more recently. I like shroom tea a lot better then eating them. Sometimes they don't taste bad at all and other times, they taste absolutely disgusting. Shroom tea brings on the trip faster but I do notice the duration is a little less then when I eat them. But then again, my trips generally only last about 3-4 hours. I have had a few exceptions where my trips lasted about 8 hours (on 3.5 grams)

that is pretty silly...

the best way, in my opinion, is to take them fresh or dried with orange juice.  the oj helps in so many ways.  i think the extra acid helps break down the mushrooms and plus you get a bunch of vitamins.  orange juice is like liquid energy. :laugh:  it's just good for you and it tastes good.

Yeah, that was kind of unfair. I was pretty buzzed when I posted that.

But it is hard for me to understand why some people have such a hard time with the way mushrooms taste. Fresh they taste like regular mushrooms just slightly bitter. Dried they taste kinda sweet. I understand that some people do not like the taste of mushrooms at all but it only lasts for a minute or two. Tough it out and don't waste anything.

There's an age-old method to get down almost any nasty tasting substance: hold your nose while you chew and don't let go till you swallow. Almost all our sense of taste is actually smell (besides the basics : salt, sugar, bitter, sour). The subtleties of any food flavor is actually in the smell. So, hold your nose until you chew the mushrooms to a pulp, then swallow. The only hard part is breathing through your mouth while you chew.

You'll be surprised at how effective this is. It works for children taking medicine etc....

Fresh is by far the best way to go, with any strain. Unfortunately it's not always convenient :frown:
Eating dried cubensis is a breeze, and in fact they do actually taste good.
Dried liberty caps are stringy/wirey, while the caps tend to soften with the saliva the stems stay that way and get caught between the teeth. Also they have a real oper-powering musty odour.
Wavy caps (psilocybe cyanescens) have caps that are as rough as leather and I find this very difficult to get down without gagging when trying to eat dry.

As for tea making the best way is to actually keep the fruit bodies in the tea. So while you're sipping your tea, you eating the floating shrooms and when you've finished the tea you can eat the rest of the rehydrated shrooms.
No waste, faster comeup, same duration, no overpowering dry musty mush taste :wink:

After experimenting quite a bit with tea I've decided to stick with just eating the dried shrooms.
Tea pros: none
Tea neutral: faster comeup
Tea cons: hassle to make, some psiloc(yb)in is destroyed, much shorter duration of trip
Better do some experimenting of your own to see if tea is worth it for you  :wink:

I find that if I make Shroom Tea, or Shroom Hot Chocolate, my trips become more vivid and visual. When I eat the shrooms whole (in ice cream, or chocolate, or plain) my trips tend to get VERY psychological and not very visual, and any visuals I do get are very dark and creepy. I usually come up from tea in about 10-15 mins, while eating takes up to 1.5 hours. But I guess it just depends on the person.

I used to just chew and suck on the things for an hour. I can deal with the taste but i find the trip more intense and comes on faster in tea form.

I also find that the duration fo the trip lasts a lot longer with tea :]

As for heat destroying the psilocybin, there has lately been dispute over that i think.

It has a lot to do with personal chemistry and what you have been eating that day as well.

i have found many methods to be very effective. a quick and easy way to disguise the taste is to cut your shrooms into small pieces and mix them with salad dressing. ranch works very well and by cutting them first you don't have to spend as much time chewing them. the only problem i ever have with grinding them in my coffee grinder and then putting them in cherry kool aid is that when ground to a fine powder the shrooms barely absorb any water making them float and not really mix. i usually take about 5 grams dried mixed in about 4 ounces of cherry kool aid two times.

okay my opinion here, I have taken cranberry juice, orange juice and 2 vitamin c tabs, mixed it good ground the mushies to a fine powder in a coffee grinder, add to the juice mix in blender add ice, it hits so hard and fast its almost instant, I think it is the vitamin c, and it lasts long, also no taste issues!! Just my 2 cents

RC's girl has a sensitive stomach to fowl tasting treats, but when RC ground up the shrooms in a coffee grinder and mixed them in with OJ, RC and his girl could barely taste them. No waste, no hassle (as long as you have $20 for a dedicated shroom grinder), and no torture. Dried shrooms in the mouth whole is the worst way to go in my opinion; props to you who can endure that!

i used to eat freeze dried mushrooms out of the box (for cooking). so eating them straight wasnt so bad. it wasnt plesant as i finshed them, but, it wasnt too bad.

an easy way to eat the shrooms is get a chocolate bar, take a big bite, then shove the shrooms in your mouth and chew chew chew untill you cant chew anymore.

i swear your sont taste anything but chocolate. Otherwise i would puke...the taste of shrooms has made me gag and throw up before :/

I got a great method that gave me a 10 hour trip and worked well,
Powdered shrooms, heat up a small amount of milk, im talking a shot glass full so it is warm, not hot. Put the powdered shrooms in the milk and add a drop of honey, stir and either drink on empty stomach or "chew" the milk for a while, the fine mushie dust gets into the emusion suspension or somethign so it is absorbed the traditional way with no nasty taste!

I get my dried shrooms, grind into a powder in a coffee grinder, then mix the powder with OJ in a blender, and blend it some more.  you can omit the grind to a powder stage if you want, but then you get SUPER pulpy OJ.  It's kinda like a shroom smoothie :smile:

I always chew the shrooms until there is nothing left. Occasionally they taste kinda nasty, but normally I am not bothered by it. I guess I do this because I want to make sure I'm getting all I can out of it. I'm the kind of guy who still has the acid paper under his tongue 5+ hours later.

i usually eat them fresh....with OJ....put the shrooms in your mouth, add some OJ, and chew away...cant taste the shrooms at all...but tryin to swallow the mass as well as the liquid is sometimes a problem...:S

I agree with ya Fick. Kinda like slamming a shot of whiskey. OJ is my usual transport liquid. Ocassionally I'll use Nesquick. It's all aabout as nasty to me.

all of my shrooming has been by eating dry. I thought the taste would be much worse than it actually was, but i'm sure shrooms vary in degree of nastiness. I know one dude who simply loves the taste of shrooms, he would just eat them out of a big bowl like chips as a snack if he could. i usually only chew for a little bit and gulp em down - sometimes in a pb and j sandwich with plenty of liquid on hand.

I think some of the reason people think something is so nasty is because they have the idea in their head that it should taste horrible, and it just builds it up so that gag reflex is rearing to go. like if you didn't know you were eating dog shit, you probably wouldn't think it was that bad...or maybe not, hehe.

For me I've eaten them dried before aswell as mixing from powder into OJ. I would say I like the OJ better for several reasons.

I can't exactly say that I hate the taste of mushrooms so much as I hate the texture (of dried that is). For me it tastes like I'm eating bark or sandpaper or something and it just causes me to gag. Infact I'm tasting nothing at all almost like paper but it's just so damn nasty for me I dunno why.

So I make the drink, it takes me not more than a few seconds to powder my shrooms mix them in and Drink down. Doesn't taste like anythign at all, and I come up faster because I have powdered them.

My 2cents anyways...

i boiled mine like i would Tea,butused the water in a gallon jug, doubled the koolaid,and doubled the sugar required for a gallon jug. It tasted like Hi C or Hawain Punch. Trip was awesome 8 hours. Taste was great,i have done this with 3 flavors,all of them ROCKED.

Couple things:

I have made mushroom cider, with good results. I just ground up some mushies, let them soak for 20 or 30 minutes in cold apple cider, strained, drank, enjoyed.

Also, there is a tea called Egyptian Licorice made by Yogi Tea company, which masks the taste of mushrooms incredibly well. it contains (all organic, or course) licorice root, cinnamon bark, orange peel, ginger root, cardamon seed, black pepper, clove bud. ratios are a mystery. you can find this at food co-ops and maybe grocery stores.

Third thing, fresh mushies are the best to eat, in my opinion. dried are convenient for camping. but NEVER eat half-dried mushrooms. somehow they are worse than fresh or dried, ugh!!

I don't, dried mushrooms to me taste like dog shit...
I've tried chewing them; but it takes very long (45minutes), and it's very hard to endure. :sad:

So I grind them up; put it in a juice; stir for 15 minutes and then drink it in 15 seconds.

I think I'll use grapefruit-juice next time; just read that it can enhance drugs; because your liver doesn't detox the psylocin that much if grapefruit-juice has been ingested.
Any thoughts on this?

I've taken mushrooms in lots of ways, i'll list what I thought of them. All my experiences have been with P.Subaeruginosa.

Eaten Raw, Just picked - Love it! :laugh: Tastes just like regular edibles, with a little bit of a different taste to it. But I have to say I really like the concept of eating them the way they were intended to be eaten. Only done this once, as eating as you pick is not always convenient, but I had little stomach discomfort and a very 'fresh' trip.

Dried, chewed - No problem here, pretty tasteless, keeps you occupied for a while, just like eating little chips.

Dried, in tea - I find tea trips extremely mellow, long duration, few visuals, just more of a stoned experience. On the plus side I get less nausea this way. If I decide to drink the dregs at the bottom of the tea cup, it's very hard to get down, makes me gag.

Dried/Capped - Very conveniant, even if it does mean swallowing up to 10 caps. I find this way hardest on the stomach, but is the most conveniant way of taking them.

I've heard of people chopping dried mushrooms finely and putting them in a bowl, and then eating corn chips dipped in salsa, and dipping the chip into the bowl of mushrooms. Sounds like a good method to me, might try it some time.

i havent ever eaten shrooms dry in my life.. although i have tripped a LOT, they were with PB and J, and the other times i blended them in a vanilla-banana,cinnamon mix. i cant stand the taste of the shrooms in the blended mix, i just plug my nose, drink, stop, repeat. i got friends who jsut eat em like chips! i wish i could do it like that...

Hm, everyone seems to have a different say about the tea preparation.

Let's break this down:
-The two main "ingredients" are Psilocybin and Psilocin (as everyone knows).
-Psilocin is the more sensitive of the two and breaks down pretty easily while Psilocybin is more stable.
-The blueing on shrooms is the psilocin breaking down.


So it seems that by making mushroom tea, the psilocin would suffer the most. So mushrooms with a lot of psilocin that bruise blue heavily, like cubensis and subaeruginosa, would lose more potency than the ones with mainly psilocybin (semilanceata).
Also, the difference between making tea from fresh shrooms and eating them fresh would be bigger than making tea from dry shrooms and eating them dry. Why? Because the dried mushrooms have already lost some degree of psilocin.
As to the difference in the character of the trip, my guess is that when boiling some other less active alkaloids like baeocystin die as well.


Does anyone know the actual temperatures where these substances start to break down?

Yeah, munching them fresh is the way to go. I'm going to have to make some tea with fresh mushrooms sometime soon. If the mushrooms are dried I'm going to have to say that, though it may seem counterintuative due to psilocin's sensitivity to temperature, I've had my most intense experiences with mushroom tea. I tend to avoid eating the floaters are refill the cup with water and get three or four cups down, then eat the squidgy mushroom pulp that's at the bottom of the cup.

It's kind of weird, as a kid I always hated the taste of ordinary food mushrooms and disliked oyster and shiitake mushrooms even more, so I anticipated HATING the taste of mushrooms when I first tried them. But I actually really liked the taste and had no trouble chewing them until there was naught but pulpy goo left in my mouth. Go figure...
