well using a cake with visible contams is always bad, as you can't necessarily be sure you removed everything.

Another thing, all this h202 usage. I'm not sure its a good idea to have h202 around crumbled cakes. Until the mycellium recovers, it is more prone to contams. The h202 will kill some types of contams, but not all. It will however slow the recovery of the h202. I know a lot of people are doing this now, but I think they should be careful to not use a whole lot if they think they actually need it.

Sounds like good work though. good luck.

keep in mind that the mycelium network sends nutrients all throughout the cake. So you can't necessarily be sure that you're rid of the contaminants.

the H2O2/water was about 1:10 and i didnt spray the cakes directly. The contamination was in a completely uncolonized area. The nearest colonization was about 1/2 an inch away. The spot was very small and i only used the mycelium from the opposite side of the cake from which the contam was on. I think it will be okay though..we'll see. wish me luck! all my last casings have failed (5 of em). I was extremely sterlie this time tho.

most casings fail for 1 of 2 reasons--
either too wet
or
not enough fresh air exchanges.
with possible contams lurking, it becomes even more important to keep humidity down in the proper range and give the tray plenty of fresh air.
if you do these things, odd favor your success.

Am i sposta be airing it out even when its "re-colonizing" the casing layer? I thought it was spoata be incubated at 80 or so in a dark place with no gas exchange. THEN when myc. peaks through you start giving gas exchange, light, and cooler temps. Is that right? Or is there sposta be gas exchange the entire time? Oh yeah...i have the casing in an airtight container so it will probably get high humidity. I also thought that high humidity was good UNTIL you birthed. Please help!! I dont want to mess this one up!

you are essentially correct but i'd still exchange air even as the casing is colonized.
the casing itself traps the co2 needed to trigger pinning as well as maintaining the proper humidity at the micro-level.
but the upper layer of the casing can still be attacked by molds and needs to be ventilated and kept at lower humidity to prevent this.

im pretty sure that oxygen is needed to trigger pinning..not CO2. But, i'll air it out once a day until birth..then i'll air it out like 3 times a day.

better re-read those mycology manuals, it's co2 that triggers pinning.
but increasing o2 means decreasing co2 and vice versa so it works out in the end.
