Ok if you use one of these the kind that uses the sub heater. Put in one of these pumps it will circulate the water so the incubator stays more evenly heated throughout the entire incubator. The incubator will heat up much quicker and the temps in the incubator will be within 2 degrees of the setting of the pump. Hope it helps someone

Iv read that humidity is needed even in the incubator. Is this true? If so how much?

You don't need to add humidity to an incubator, as long as your jars do not dry out, there should be enough humidity from the water in the substrate.

What would cause this?? The flying space coyote i know is using a fishtank heater in a jar of water as his heating agent. would this cause a substrate to dry?

I've used that application, and have had no problems with the substrate drying out.

you should be fine with that setup . this would not normally happen unless a dry heat source is used .and, probably would not be noticeable until rh in the incubator is below 50% rh acts like heat transfer, the grater the difference, the faster the rate of exchange. so, dry air will suck moisture out of the jars until rh is equalized .

I'm assuming you can aquire the pump and the heater at a local pet shop or fish store, etc? And do you cover your rubbermaid bin with that blanket or use a lid?

That looks like a Tronic heater. I bought a 200W Tronic "Submersible" which is not truly submersible, it has a "water line" depth marker and so on... but you submerse it with success?
Also, be careful with the dial, they break very easily!

Same maker different models of heater. The one with the water line I would not stick in the bottom of a incubator.

I've heard it can get high (humidity) but the one I've seen has never gone over 70%. I hear it's not good to let it get to low or it can draw moisture from the jars.

I've got a tub in tub set up that I have also used as incubator/terrarium. It's humidity stays right at 90%. I put some self-adhesive foam tape weatherstrip (3/8in.-w /16in.-thick) on the underside of the lid where the container makes contact and it holds humidity great. Without the stripping I couldn't get above 78%. Got it at wal-mart. I also have 2 10-15 gallon submersible fish tank heaters and a large bubble stone. The stone runs 24/7. Good environment control.
