Well, vermiculite and brown rice flour come with all kinds of contaminants in them to begin with, so it doesn't really matter if you are sterile when you are mixing them together. You can pre-sterilize the vermiculite and brown rice flour by baking it beforehand (spread seperately on a cookie sheet, bake for 20 min at 300F)to get rid of these pre-existing contaminants. You need to be sterile when innoculating. If the needletip becomes contaminated, or if you suck an contaminants back into the needle, then you're going to end up with jars of mold.

the most important step is innoculating the jars. becareful not to place the needle lying around all over and remember to sterilize the tip of the needle after every jar with alcohol and lighter. the other stuff you don't have to worry about as long you follow what needs to be done.

what i don't understand is why you have to sterilize after innoculating each jar, if they just came out of the pressure cooker shouldn't they all be steril?

yes, the contents of the jars are sterile, but by putting the syringe into the substrate to innoculate, you are introducing something new. If contaminants get on the syringe somehow, then you are putting them into your substrate. I personally think the alcohol and lighter business is overkill if you are careful about not exposing the needle to anything.------------------ see me here: www.geocities.com/vorpal_rd/justapic.html

Hey friend, In answer to your ?. Let me shed a little light on the matter,....1 it's really not that important to be completely clean. Now remember there are 2 sides to every coin! Take a little time to think about this... If pre-prep.-work wasn't that important, then why would some of these so called "xperts", still have contam. problems? True like I said, you can get away with not doing any prep. work, but do you really want to take the chance? You can bring something new to the work envir. just from breathing(i'm sure you already know this stuff...just tryin to help). Take my word for it! MOTHER NATURE CAN AND SOMETIMES WILL FIND AWAY! I'm not tryin to throw you off track, just tryin to put it in your head how easy it would be to take 10 min. of your time to do some of the work and not to completely trust your P.COOKER. BETTER SAFE THEN SORRY! Also I read some of the other people that wrote to you in reguards to this post...Here's another tip for ya!...when you use your needle, keep in mind that as you withdraw the needle from your substrate, sometimes you'll get a little back action. What I mean by this is, the needle tends to suck air back into it's self, caused from the plunger. I usually put in about 3/4 of the intened amount, and start to pull out. I learned all this from a friend on here, that picks 2 people a year to train in this art. He's very knowlegdeable in this. anyway I promised to help as many people I can, to repay him. So I wouldn't stear you wrong. GOOD LUCK!!------------------ If your not living on the edge....Then your taking up to much space.
