Did my friends sterilization method work?

Today my friend sterilized his jars. He took a pot and put 2 sponges and a rag on the bottom then he put a spagetti strainer and filled the pot with water. The water was brought to a boil and the jars were placed on the spagetti strainer, this was done to keep the jars away from the direct flame. The jars were steamed for an hour. When all of the steaming was done my friend poured out the water and saw that the water was kinda dirty from stuff that had come out of the sponges (i guess they had been used before on dirty dishes). Are the jars sterile or contaminated? It looks like steam got into some of the jars and they got a little moister. Did the crap from the water get into the jars and contaminate them?

prolly not. if youre paraniod then re do them.

Place them on a cloth directly in the pot, add little less than 1 inch of water, cover and boil for 90 minutes.
