I use a deep fryer with water instead of oil(I set the temp around 250).If you have a contam problem you could sterilize your substrate ingriedents seperatly in the over.set it at 320 for 30min.

oh yeah, you still have to boil your jars but you will get less contams.and try putting your jars in zipplock bags it might keep out some of the water

if your pot is large enough, just put something (i use jar lids holding up a plate) to raise the jars higher above the water without using less.
also, you might tape your holes.

If you can, go to Wal Mart or some place like that and ask if they have a canning pot. It will be in the seciton that you'd find the canning jars:-)

It's just a big tin pot, but it comes with a little metal rack to hold your jars. Fill the bottom of the pot with 3-4 inches of water, put your jars of substrate on the rack. Now the rack will be held up by the sides of the pot...you'll understand when you see it:-)

I've used my canning pot many times for BRF/Verm many times and it's worked GREAT!!!

It's about $20 but well worth it
