A question about multiple personality disorder
    #13479934 -

If an individual has multiple personality disorder, is it possible for each of the personalities involved to have other mental illnesses? For example, could one personality be manic while another is clinically depressed? Furthermore, if this is possible, could one or more of the personalities suffer from multiple personality disorder as well?

I don't know the answer to either of these questions; but, I'm very interested to hear theories pertaining to the second one!

Think about how deep it could go. One person could have infinate personalities if the second part were possible! Say one person had 3 personalities and each of those personalities had three more and so on and so on.

This popped into my head out of nowhere today and I've been pondering it ever since.

Not sure, but I know multiple personality disorder is very rare.

I know this is a far stretch but what if this explains life? What if whoever created us has "multiple personality disorder" and so do all of their personalities? What if we are all just manifestations of a "mentally ill" higher being? Think about it.

You're not making any sense and I don't think you understand what this disorder means in terms of symptoms.
If multiple personalities would exist in the same person, it would mean that there's already a fixed number of pre-set personalities, and that only one of those must normally be manifesting in each individual. Do you think that these pre-set personalities exist? If yes, can you describe each of these personality kinds, in terms of behavior, cognition, emotions, and neurological processes?
Multiple personality disorder, or dissociative personality disorder, is a disorder that includes these following symptoms: anxiety attacks, dissociation, memory loss, numbness, depression, mood fluctuations, etc. People with comorbid personality disorders are more likely to be diagnosed with multiple personality disorder. For instance, people diagnosed with borderline personality disorder can have a comorbid histrionic personality, or a narcissistic personality. But this scenario is way different than the example portrayed by you where multiple, separate, personalities exist in the same individual, personalities which can, in their turn, have other multiple, separated personalities within them. I also don't see the link between multiple personality disorder and the existence of a creator. There's no law that says there has to be a creator in order for us to exist.

I was pretty stoned last night and after over thinking my original question for way too long that was where I ended up...in nonsense land so please disregard that portion of the thread.

I get what your saying about how people with multiple personality disorder usually have other mental illnesses as well but is it possible for some of the other illnesses to only affect one of the multiple personalities?

Like I already said, it seems that you think that one can find different personalities within the same individual, but I think you don't understand that one can't possibly be able to differentiate between behaviors and thoughts and attribute them to only a certain kind of personality. Personality is something dynamic, not static. We see similar behaviors in different people whose personalities are more or less the same, but it's impossible to find different kinds of personalities within the same individual because according to the definition of personality, an individual only gets to have one personality - it is the accumulation of all his behaviors, likes, dislikes, qualities and flaws.

I remember reading "Sybil" when I was young. What fascinated me the most was that she had so many personalities and they each seemed to be completely separate from each other. She would suffer from memory loss when her personality changed, they all had different names and ages and some even spoke in accents. The book was a true story. The poor girl went through hell growing up and when things got too hard for her to handle she would subconsciously develop a new persona who was better fit to deal with the abuse she was going through. I forgot how many she had in total but to this day it is still the most on record in one patient. What do you make of a case like that?

Hi, well I'm no medical expert but I do have lived experience of PD.

Cases such as Sybil and Eve White (three faces of eve) are extreme cases of DID/MPD.  The knowledge surrounding how it is caused and treated is continuously being updated and revised, as such many professionals would say the diagnosis is controversial.

DID has a close cousin, BPD.  In terms of the dissociative spectrum scale where at one end traits are minimal and the other extreme, I would rank BPD quite high.  While those with BPD don't clearly switch distinct personalities as seen in cases such as DID, the type of personality change seen in BPD comes down to modalities.  The easiest way to think of this is ego states theory.  You see babies as a collection of states, they are happy, sad, tired, angry, hungry etc.  They go from one state to another with no recall of how they got there or how long it will last unless they are taught self soothing techniques by the caregiver which in turn is introjected and used in later life.  Folk with a diagnosis of DID go thru similar shifts as do people with BPD.  Only for people with BPD the continuous frame exists, no amnesia but once a mode has successfully taken hold it is very hard to recall that this is just temporary.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not talking about a mood or drama, I'm talking about selves or modes that are equally just as terrifying to have and see.

Only with intense therapy and learning new skills and getting better acquainted with oneself can a person begin to undo all the stuff done to them in life.

As for your metaphysical question, hmm.. it's interesting!

Wow that was interesting. What does BPD stand for? I know the PD is stands for personality disorder but what's the B for? I'd like to read more about it.

The human mind is so complex isn't it? I wonder if there will ever come a time when we fully understand it.

Meher Baba talks about multiple personalities in his book 'Beams'. He says ultimately we are all one soul and experience being seperate individuals because of the grand illusion that is the universe. Here is the short quote.
Quote:
However, cases presumed to be of the
many-souls-one-body relationship frequently
turn out to be instances of split personality.
They are not exceptions to the one-bodyone-soul equation. In split personality some
dissociated nexus from the psyche of the
same soul gets possession of its body and
seeks separate and exclusive expression. It
is not another soul or spirit but another
group of impressions (sanskaras) of the
same soul or spirit. In split personality each
homogeneous nexus of the psyche takes
possession of the body for some time, to
make room for other nexuses of this or
previous incarnations. These other nexuses
are qualitatively different and are incapable
of being accommodated in the first nexus;
so they seek alternate expression instead of
simultaneous adjustments.

Also you should checkout Billy Milligan. Incredible story, the guy had like 25 people living in him, many of which were in incredibly talented and spoke different languages. According to Meher Baba this case would be an example of multiple souls taking use of one body. THe split happened when the guy was in deep despair and was considering, or was about to kill himself.

Here is some more from the book a page or two down. (adresses the metaphysical question)

Quote:
Since the one-body-one-soul equation can
have so many exceptions, the question of
determining the number of souls in
existence becomes complicated. There is
another aspect to this question which lifts it
beyond the ken of any need for enumeration.
The number of souls from this point of view
is infinite. There is one infinite, indivisible
soul which, through illusion, appears as
many separate souls. Just as the one real
soul is infinite in its indivisible being, the
many souls into which it appears to get split
are infinite in number. The shadow of the
Infinite is infinite and remains infinite.
Though the number of souls who attain full
or human consciousness is limited and
growing, the total number of souls of all
plants, animals, insects, atoms, etc. is
infinite and cannot be counted.

The quotes above from Baba do read poetically, but remember if you are learning about clinical features of DID, I would use it as light reading as you don't want to skew your learning journey.  Clinicians stand fast and turn nature/nurture on its head; they like the biopsychosocial models of PD development, some would say incarnations are useful if the client leans toward the esoteric; I however do not.  Buddhist works are fine and a better example than, say, christianity, but for nothing more and certainly not for explaining a DSM-IV-TR psychiatric diagnosis.

Saying that, I do like the notion of many souls and when distressed a better suited one takes over, but this is reflected in the way the disorder develops; usually in severe ritualized abuse cases.

BPD is indeed Borderline PD.

No, a false self of a true person cannot have a mental disorder.  Fundamental logic works great here:thumbup:

I hear what your saying about not wanting to skew my learning journey but I like to learn about both clinical and spiritual explanations for life's problems. It's always been my favorite way to examine things because I feel like the answers often lie somewhere in the middle of both. Your so right about Buddhist teachings. Buddhism is great when it comes to exploring the spiritual side of things. I always found Buddhist teachings to be the most insightful.
