Mayor: Cut thumbs off graffiti 'punks' (NV)

RENO, Nevada (AP) -- The mayor of Las Vegas has suggested that people who deface freeways with graffiti should have their thumbs cut off on television.

"In the old days in France, they had beheadings of people who commit heinous crimes," Mayor Oscar Goodman said Wednesday on the TV show "Nevada Newsmakers."

Goodman said the city has a beautiful highway landscaping project and "these punks come along and deface it."

"I'm saying maybe you put them on TV and cut off a thumb," the mayor said. "That may be the right thing to do."

Goodman also suggested whippings should be brought back for children who get into trouble.

Another panelist on the show, state university system regent Howard Rosenberg, said cutting off the thumbs of taggers won't solve the problem and Goodman should "use his head for something other than a hat rack."

I was visiting some good friends who live in Vegas a few years back and had was at a campaign party Goodman threw at a bar. I remember him being obviously wasted and walking around shaking peoples hands...

Seemed like a cool guy. But I dont really have a problem w/ graffiti. I'd rather look at a colorful wall w/ a theme than some grey ass concrete. I say we cut the thumbs off the BAD graffiti artists.

I'm glad I live in Reno.  Reno's politics are a joke too, but for fuck sake Las Vegas is like a fucking child's circus when it comes to politics.

That mayor should lose their position for saying something like that.  What is this?  China?  Soviet Russia?  In soviet russia, grafitti punishes you!

Sounds reasonable as long as you ban them from public assistance as well.

Drug use is a personal choice which the government should not involve themselves in.

Theft or public vandalism affects the property of others, which no-one has the right to do.

they should contract a few street artists to do murals on the spaces people are vandalizing.

For the state of NV, it's cheaper to whack off a finger than to pay for the paint.  Our state's economy is Fucked.  It started long before the economical collapse, it started when indian casinos started taking root all across the nation.

I don't know if you've seen the desert around Las Vegas or not, but a couple of paintings on their brick walls won't make their flat dusty dirt brown shithole town better lol

we've had a number of property owners in the atlanta area that had
done the same as part of revitalization programs and I'd rather have
my tax dollars spent directing them in a positive direction than spent
on incarcerating them

Don't forget that if it wasn't for Las Vegas financially supporting all you freeloaders up North you'd be completely fucked.  Its about time to move the capital from Carson City (Carson City? Seriously?) to Las Vegas and then just cut off all the funding for you dipshits up there.  Let you collect the taxes you need from your own citizens for a while instead of suckling the Las Vegas Teat (while bitchin constantly about how much we suck).

Maybe we should just cut off the Reno/Tahoe area and give it to California.  Good riddance.
