top of jars not colonizing

AFOAF's pf jar is not colonizing at the top. Is there a way he can make the top colonize faster?

might be all the moisture settled to the bottom of yur jar, and dried out the top (thus not colonizing). Flip the jars upside down and let em finish that way. keep conditions optimum and you should be fine.

how long has it been colonising? the top of the substrate may have dried out.
if it takes too long, you may try taping over the inoculation hole and tightening the lid, in increase in humidity inside the jar may rehydrate it, but it will still take longer, since you aren't getting any air exchange.

its been going for like 3 and a half weeks, everywhere is colonized except the top half inch. How long should it be dunk if dryness is the case.

if it's not colonized, don't dunk, it will almost certainly contam.

about 6 hours will suffice.
another thing one could do is place cakes directly onto the perlite [assuming you're using perlite] untill pinning starts and between flushes.

perhaps the top half inch is not colonizing because it is not meant to. Are you sure this isn't the dry vermiculite layer developed by Fanaticus to prevent contaminationa and increase gas exchange? If this is the case then it's not colonizing because it has no nutrients or water for the mycelium (on purpose). I hope this isn't the case.

My friend is in the exact same boat that you are in.  This friday will be 4 weeks for his jars.. and they arent colonizing well at the top.. yesterday he came up with the idea of flipping the jars... we'll see if that helps.. he hopes he can birth on friday.  he is pretty excited because this is his first attempt! :smile:  Good luck..
