Fighting a good friend of mine soon for sport, MMA style-o liability question
    #13300277 -

Me and my good friend think we're tougher than one another so we're putting our money where our mouths are and bought mouth guards and 6 oz gloves.  Loser buys the beer for the weekend. We exercise together and are both in the best shape of our lives and weigh in right now both at 160 pounds give or take.

Anyone ever compete in this kind of stuff? What should we eat prior to competition? I assume just brown rice, some chicken and fruits? Sound like a good competition meal?

We'll have a ref and have been given the go ahead to do it on the mats in the wrestling room of our college gym so safety is no issue.  No hard feelings afterwards just simply sportsmanship.  Gonna be a good time, I'll let you know how it goes.

I'm 5'9, 160 lbs
he is 6'0, 160 lbs, slightly further reach

I'm gonna win btw

Probably happening within the next couple weeks so if I disappear, I lost and got brain damage.

Also, should we sign like a waiver stating that if something happens to one of us like (god forbid) one of us gets seriously injured we can't sue or should I just forget that?

I hope you are both trained enough to know how far you can go before you break a bone or severely damage joints.

I would split the cost with him and get a lawyer on that. If one you you ends up with a broken knee and in a cast for a year... That won't end well. Not to mention any long term effects.

Maybe you two should stick to more of a kickboxing style of match.

Also if you guys do have insurance, would it be covered in something like that? Just something to think about in a worst case scenario.

This may happen, my friend from back home might come up to film it because he's a film major and an amazing HD camera.  we talked about it and he wants to have in his archive's to use some day if ever.

But anyone comment on a good thing to eat beforehand or is what I said fine?

Sounds like a very bad idea.

By saying "bought mouthguards" it shows that you haven't ever sparred before, let alone fought and may I suggest that you haven't actually trained in a combat sport at all?

If you're not a trained combat athlete you are risking serious injury.

Combat sports are about a solid foundation, when I first started Muay Thai I trained on pads for 2 full years before I was allowed to spar plus another 3 years (5 years/5-6 days a week) before my first fight.

Best case scenario it's a terrible sloppy fight where you both gas out and nobody gets injured.

Worst case, someone suffers a serious lifelong injury.

My suggestion, buy some 16oz boxing gloves/headgear and spar (not fight).

I used to spar with gloves, pretty much for all of highschool.  I bought a mouth guard here because my other mouth guard is at home.  As for burning out, I doubt it, we're both in our prime.

I've never sparred with him if that's what you meant though.  He wrestled throughout HS, I boxed so we both have different strengths  still gonna do it.  I've been in street fights and have won and lost throughout my life, I'm still here, no damage was ever done.  I didn more damage to my body through drugs and skateboarding.

Make sure both you guys have groin protectors.

I hope you guys are conditioned because the large majority of people can't take strong hits to the head without injury.

we want it on video.  If injuries occur then hope your health insurance covers it.  Other than that, where's our entertainment?

in high school a friend bought two pairs of 16oz boxing gloves and it became a weekend ritual for a while... We didn't have mouth guards, or head protection and we were fine. Some of us were pretty big but we never pushed it to a knock out or anything, so I guess it was just friendly sparring.

From the sounds of it you are taking a lot of precautions so you should be fine. Have fun.

I have faith in myself, he says he'll kick my ass too so that confidence is probably sprouting from somewhere.

I mean the chance that someones big lollipop hayemaker with 6oz gloves connects or someone cops a knee in the chin, a regular body isn't supposed to take that punishment.

In regards to the legal issue, just to be certain you could write up a basic agreement basically saying:

"both parties are willingly entering into this contest, both are aware of and accept the inherent risks.

Both parties also agree that neither party is liable for, nor do they have any claim in regards of any injury caused during the contest whatsoever.

(SIGNED) (DATED) both parties. "

The 6 oz gloves really dont do shit, so unless you really want to KO eachother... I'd recomend against these. Atleast get some traditional boxing gloves or some Muai-Thai gloves.

I also recomend making a rule that striking is only allowed while both opponents are standing. So that if it hits the ground etc you bypass all the various situations that can turn nasty and just have a submission war on the ground and striking while standing.

Whats your background mostly in Preperation H?

Also Chubba - I see what your saying but they arent properly trained Muai Thai fighters, i very much doubt that any of them will be able to deliver a knee to the chin properly of a standing opponent.

I've been hit hard as fuck with bare knuckles, I've never been knocked unconscious yet, curious to how that feels.  I one time had someone try and knee me in the face but it never landed, probably would've felt like getting punched did, not that bad, felt more like my head was being pushed back really fast because of adrenaline, I was surprised at the lack of pain.

Until the next day, the next morning hurt more than the fight did, I had what felt like whip lash for a few days and had a nice scab on my arm from sliding on cement, this time it will be on a mat lol.
