a.  Join the military

b.  Do drugs

If by not too long ago, you mean ~6 years ago, then yes.
And you're right, I only briefly considered it. Pretty sure many have. I got over that real quick.
When you're in a really rough spot it may seem like a viable escape option. Desperate times call for desperate measures.
I didn't join though, and built myself back up. I'm not exactly where I want to be in life, but I'm in a very good place and I'm on my way there.
I spent most of my 20s trying to figure out what I wanted to do in life, and I think I have a pretty good idea now, but it's continually evolving and being refined.

I think if anyone can find a career that pays the bills and is a job they love and are passionate about, that's a win.
It's also important to stay well rounded and not limit yourself. But definitely, find what you love and just do it.

Yeah, its a tough one.

I rushed into an entry level welding trades program once i overcame my drug addict lifestyle.

Wrong choice - all i was thinking about was the paycheque. Honestly, i never used my head at all when it came to analyzing what i wanted and needed out of life, 7 months and $4000 down the drain, i am no more closer to a rewarding career than i was when i started...

Although, actually - going through that schooling process and facing the hard reality of being a dirty blue collar worker in heavy industry .. It taught me alot. Really helped me reevaluate my needs and abilities. A trade was my way of avoiding of an academic pursuit, but really, i've come to realize i am more ready to go to college than i thought.

I am looking for trades work right now (preferably carpentry, not welding!) - but am ultimately hoping to get into an associates degree program at a community college, working towards a science degree in biology...

I would love to work for the government as a conservationist or wildlife biologist. Who knows though...

i was always really into psychology, but after going through a bunch of bullshit with rehab (for marijuana. seriously. rehab for someone who smokes one bowl a day before bed. oh yeah, i was at rock bottom alright :nonono:) and therapy. i can say i've lost faith in psychology. i mean its still good, but all the therapists and psychologists i've seen in the last year or two have been treating me right from their text books. i'm so fed up with therapy that i just dont wanna do it as a career anymore. after being in little "groups" with winey addicts all day at outpatient rehab i decided i hated dealing with peoples whiney bullshit. I'd definitely still be interested in clinical psychology if i could find a way to weed out the immature whiney people and treat those with REAL problems like OCD, Anxiety disorders and depression. not just "my mom yelled at me so i drank a fifth and threw up on my computer and now its broken so i screamed at her to buy me a new one and she hit me omg my life is so terrible i'm gunna be even more melodramatic now and make vague empty threats about ending my life bawwwwww."

but i'm still gunna get my psychology degree. i'm hoping i can make a career for myself either doing psychedelic assisted therapy, or maybe working in an ER or something talking people down from bad trips haha. i seem to be pretty decent at that. talking someone down from their bad trip and helping them see the importance of all the negative they are seeing and eventually leading them back to something positive is like the best feeling ever. idk. i want to somehow be able to support myself by helping people have positive psychedelic experiences. maybe i could work in an ibogaine clinic. wow. i hadnt even thought of that before this thread. imma look into that one.

sounds awesome.

and we could organize psychedelic hikes through the national parks from the psychedelic healing center. We could dose everyone at the trailhead and have it guided by you, the park ranger, and show us cool plants and shit. and i'll be there with my psychology degree (and xanax) to help people who have a bad time (although i cant see how that would happen in the woods)

i really hope psychedelics are approved in a medical setting by the time i graduate. i'd love to do therapy involving psychedelics.

are there any countries where this is allowed now? i know canada has ibogaine but working there would be more like just being a trip sitter. for a few hours until the patient gets so crazy they cant move and just lay in bed speechless for the next 20 hours.

From all that my friends who work at an iboga healing center have told me, it's pretty much for serious drug addiction and behavior intervention, and I think it has too much power to be used for the healing most people seek.  I think ayahuasca and mushrooms would be my tools of choice for most of what ails people, as it doesn't seem to so violently destroy everything the way I've heard iboga does.  That said, it'd be nice to have the knowledge and skill to administer whatever appropriate for the individual.

I have came to the conclusion i will NEVER be happy working, bc i can't stand to be under someones thumb. I just want to grow weed and do whatever i want, anything but getting up to go to work.

I love to work.  Just not for other people.  I'm good at growing, it pays well, and allows me to do something that I'm ethically okay with, but legitimizing money is something I'm going to have to familiarize myself with if I plan to get a house.

You don't need to be under someone's thumb when you are working. You can work for yourself.
