My attempts at a career are being thwarted
    #4617305 -

I am unemployed and I am looking to do something. I have several options (go back to school, join the military, open my own business, find a job, etc..) I think opening my own business would be the best thing for me given that I hated school and I have a problem with being bossed around.

At first I looked into opening a bar. The prices and liabilities associated with that are immense. I have money, but not enough to do the bar thing at the moment (it appears as if I would need AT LEAST half a million (U.S.)) to even get started in m city. So, I then looked into the "Pita Pit" franchise. I got a demographic study together which I presented to the Pita Pit people. They got back to me and said that somebody has already signed a contract with them to cover all of the city that I am in.

I'm depressed and I am out of ideas. I realize that this is the third or fourth time I have asked the Pub for some ideas on what I should do, but I keep asking. Does anybody have a halfway decent idea for a business...any kind of business?

Help!!

You could try a bookstore or something like that. A bookstore is somehting I've always been interested in opening.

Actually, that was one of the reasons that I decided on not joining the military. I don't think I would fit in with a bunch of 18 year olds (I am 26). But, the main reason I don't want to join is that I don't want to participate in a war effort that I disagree with.

What kind of franchise? Pita Pit would have been perfect for me. They specifically say that their target market is college students. I would have put it in the "college" part of my town (there are two universities with 35,000 students here). The Pita Pit guy was saying that I could open one outside of my city's limits (in one of the suburbs or something), but I don't think that would be as profitable.

A bookstore would be cool, but I surmise that they don't make much money.  How would I compete with the "Barnes and Nobles" and "Borders" of the world?  Plus in my city there already are several small quirky bookstores in the "hip" parts of town.  I fear that the market is saturated.

anything from rita's ice, to panera bread, to something like u mentioned near college kids. open a lil place that gives college kids a bunch of food for minimal costs. u'd clean up.

But, I would have to compete with the university cafeterias as well.

Rita's Ice? What is that?

Panera Bread is always in ritzy strip malls around here.

In the "college" part of town that I was mentioning, there are a bunch of restaurants. A Pita Pit would have been perfect because the food is good, it is cheap, and nobody else sells pitas in this part of town (I checked).

I live in a college town that is a medium sized city (we have professional sports teams). Getting a liquor license in the "cool" areas gets very expensive.

I do believe that both of the colleges in this one "very college" area have laundry facilities on campus.

fuck the cafeterias.... If u can give kids a big box of fries and a grilled burger for under 5 bucks, you can sell them all day long...

I'm not sure how well cold stuff (Rita's ice) would sell in the winters up here. It isn't Alaska here or anything, but it does get cold and it does snow some.

There are several burger joints in this college area (McDonalds, a couple independent places, etc..)

I picked mushrooms and sold them to a local market for extra money, as well as tons of side jobs/landscaping for people all over the area. To break out big yourself you're going to have to bust major ass... I'm sure you know this.

It is tough to break into the mushroom business (especially in my state). The big farms are so efficient that it is impossible to compete against them. Picking mushrooms also doesn't sound like it would be a consistent year-round money earner.

You could join the Air Force and become an electrician. After the 4 years you could either just use your electrician schools or use your GI bill for whatever else you want.

Well, I was under the impression that real estate is overvalued all over the country right now. I think that there is a big risk in buying property.

I have enough money to start up a decent little business, but not enough to buy enough properties to provide enough income to survive off of.

But...I have had an idea. In my hometown (not the big city I live in now) the economy is wretched. This small city is in a county of about 55,000 people and it is about an hour and a half north of me. A lot of the people that live there are on welfare. You can get a nice house for 30,000 and you can buy a fixer-upper for about 10,000. You can even get homes that are up for tax sale for under 1,000.

It is a very common practise for out of town landlords to come in and buy up property there because it is so cheap. They put in just enough money to get the place to pass code and they rent the place out to HUD families (HUD is where the government pays part or all of your rent). So, these out of town landlords are guaranteed to get a government check every month. They usually rent it out for 10 years or so and they don't keep the place maintained. They will let the place be condemned or be taken because of unpaid taxes (I am not shitting you) because it is cheaper for them to let the city take it than to fix it back up to rent it. They basically let HUD families trash the place and run it into the ground and they make a nice little profit from HUD.

Pennsylvania. This town is right in the middle of the Rust Belt. All of the manufacturing jobs have moved away. The population is mainly old people on Social Security and younger people on welfare. There are some people with decent jobs, but not many.

Just to give you an idea of how bad the economy is: My mom graduated college with several degrees and a 3.98 GPA. She went looking for a job around there and was offered $6.25 an hour plus benefits. This was about 8 years ago, so I assume that $6.25 would be the equivalent of about $7.50 an hour now. $7.50 an hour for a college graduate with impeccable grades? That's how bad the economy is there.
