Real estate in your area?

So, the housing market has gone pretty bonkers all across the nation. But some places are even more out of control then others. I made a killing on my house in Las Vegas in just the 5 years that I owned it. But now I'm searching for a home in San Diego and the sticker shock is incredible. They say San Diego is in the top 5 most expensive real estate markets in the country right now. Places like New York, San Francisco and some parts of LA are still ahead, but not by much. Looks like I'm gonna have to spend half a million dollars just to get a place that isn't either tiny or a complete dump. A few years back I would've considered you wealthy if you were shopping for a half-million dollar home. Now me, a lowly construction worker, is doing just that! Of course, prices vary by locations, but there is nowhere in this county (at least within 40 miles of the coast) that I would call "affordable".
So what does it cost in your area to get a nice, simple little home or condo (say 3 bedroom, 2 bath, around 1500 sq ft)?

A nice 3-bedroom here would run you about 100k to 150K. Of course, this ain't San Diego.

That was about what the prices were in Vegas when I bought my house a few years ago. Now its more then doubled those amounts there.
And here in San Diego you can't even start looking at the shitty, broken-down places for under 250K right now. And here in Ocean Beach where I am renting right now its insane. Places that were built in the 30's and are 500-600 sq ft (thats right...no misprint there) are selling for 300-400K...for starters!

It's nutty. I live on the border of SD/La mesa and the 3 bedroom house i live in w/ 1 bathroom and a backyard is pretty dumpy. I don't know how much the place cost but the owners bought our place and the another 2 bedroom 2 bath unit on the same property for whoknowswhat. I know it cost much more than 500k.
I've got another friend in some condos in mission valley who bought a 2 bedroom 2 bath condo for 500k. The place is really nice but her living room window faces the concrete square between all the other windows that look into your windows :eyesroll:...not very private or appealing to look out into.
OB? nice, i was thinking of moving there in about a year (was beaching it there yesterday). how much do you pay for rent and how big is your place?

A nice 3 bedroom house that size in a decent area would run you about $375-450,000 in MA

My parents' house is a small duplex townhouse (which means it is connected to a separate house along one wall) and was purchased for around $150,000 in the mid 80's, and is now worth over 400K, despite having no improvements done to it in that timespan.
This is in the suburbs of LA county. You can't buy even a spartan home for a small family for under 200-300K

150k is a pretty decent house, although the market is really opening up here, and I wouldn't doubt that its gonna shoot up in the next 5-10

Ohio romps the market. You can get a killer place for $90,000. Hell, you can buy a nice, 11 room mansion with acreage for $500,000.00-up. I bought my farm in 1984. (Then 55 acres, now 67 1/2 acres) It is now worth at least 6-1/2 times what I paid for it. It's never even been for sale, and I've had over 15 offers made on it. (location, location, location...)

Nearly $1900 for 3 very small bedrooms and 1 1/2 baths. Its less then 800 sq ft. But I got two off-street parking spots and those things are like gold down here!
Let me know when you're gonna be down at the beach. I'll buy you a beer.

$185-200k in arizona, depending. You can spend another $50-100k on top of that, easily, if you want to.

It's absolutely amazing how prices vary from place to place. In my hometown (which I now live an hour and a half away from) you can get a big fixer upper for $15,000-$20,000. You can get a very nice ranch home (oftentimes with a pool) on a couple of acres for about $75,000. For $500,000 you can get a mansion that is on about 100 acres of land.

I think my locale can take the top prize for expensive plots & homes: Maui, Hawaii. The market here went bugfuck crazy 2-3 years ago.... you can't find a small rundown condo to buy & renovate for less than $350K, most places are over $400K. Last year the median price of a house here was over $700K. MEDIAN! Limited land, high developing/building costs and ultimate desirability has created a huge problem.
A major issue here to is the market speculation game. Lots of mainland investors (esp Cali money) buy homes.... sit on them... then sell them for profits later. Meanwhile they rent them out to the local folk who live and work here.... but basically can't afford to own here.
BTW- Summit, there's lots of work for skilled tradespeople out here. And they get paid well, I've heard.
