It is tough to break into the mushroom business (especially in my state). The big farms are so efficient that it is impossible to compete against them. Picking mushrooms also doesn't sound like it would be a consistent year-round money earner.

Yep, I know.

You could join the Air Force and become an electrician. After the 4 years you could either just use your electrician schools or use your GI bill for whatever else you want.

Well, I was under the impression that real estate is overvalued all over the country right now. I think that there is a big risk in buying property.

I have enough money to start up a decent little business, but not enough to buy enough properties to provide enough income to survive off of.

But...I have had an idea. In my hometown (not the big city I live in now) the economy is wretched. This small city is in a county of about 55,000 people and it is about an hour and a half north of me. A lot of the people that live there are on welfare. You can get a nice house for 30,000 and you can buy a fixer-upper for about 10,000. You can even get homes that are up for tax sale for under 1,000.

It is a very common practise for out of town landlords to come in and buy up property there because it is so cheap. They put in just enough money to get the place to pass code and they rent the place out to HUD families (HUD is where the government pays part or all of your rent). So, these out of town landlords are guaranteed to get a government check every month. They usually rent it out for 10 years or so and they don't keep the place maintained. They will let the place be condemned or be taken because of unpaid taxes (I am not shitting you) because it is cheaper for them to let the city take it than to fix it back up to rent it. They basically let HUD families trash the place and run it into the ground and they make a nice little profit from HUD.

man thats crazy 30,000 for a house! a fixer upper here cost about 300,000 and a decent condo goes for around 250,000

Being a landlord sucks. I personally clean houses for myself. There is money in it and if you actually started a buisness you could live comfortably.

Pennsylvania. This town is right in the middle of the Rust Belt. All of the manufacturing jobs have moved away. The population is mainly old people on Social Security and younger people on welfare. There are some people with decent jobs, but not many.

Just to give you an idea of how bad the economy is: My mom graduated college with several degrees and a 3.98 GPA. She went looking for a job around there and was offered $6.25 an hour plus benefits. This was about 8 years ago, so I assume that $6.25 would be the equivalent of about $7.50 an hour now. $7.50 an hour for a college graduate with impeccable grades? That's how bad the economy is there.

I don't know if that would fly in my town (it has a reputation for being very "working class"). Plus, new age stuff frightens me.

I'd move. I thought things were bad here. That does limit you on a buisness.

take a break for a while and ponder on it, that is what I am doing...that and I have other legal bullshit I got to deal with. I think I will get into something else when I do decide to go back to school again.
dont stress on shit, I have been feeling all pissed off at my life and dwelling on all the negative shit, but I started looking positive again and it is starting to bring me out of it, I have been feeling lonely too, really lonely, fuck I hate it as well..this sickness I have it not helping either...I feel like shit, I have had a hard time even breathing, that is when you know you are sick..even using an inhaler.
I hardly have been smoking either..trippy illness. It needs to go away.
