How to recognize genius?
    #1324568 - 02/21/03 09:38 AM (21 years, 1 month ago)

How does one identify true genius? Don't ask me to define genius because if i could i wouldn't ask this question.

How do i know that when i read something of Nietzsche that i am looking at genius? How do i ever really know? Is it the obscurity and originality? Sometimes when i read a text of a supposed genius all i see is sentences thrown together in an unusual matter. It could be argued that i lack the mental capacity to fully understand the depth of the author, but is it really? I understand the underlying meaning and am able to make sense of it, it just feels so god damn redundant.

A childhood friend of mine is a genius in the sense that he have very high IQ. His logic and verbal abilities are far beyond most people but apart from making somewhat stimulating conversation and kick-ass long divisions he doesn't strike me as particularly brilliant.

So what is the mark of a genius? And what truly sets one literary work apart from the rest?

Genius is relative. A vague term that depends on a subjective point of view (though some subjective points of view try to objectify it and whatnot...).

jk that last post was a joke I think the best way to tell if someone's a genius or not is to look at how well they do at school. High school. A's mean brilliant, how could it be any other way?

I agree with Sclorch,
being a genius in relative, Americans might have one idea what a genius is, Canada might have a different, even individual people have different opinions of what genius is. Who is to judge which opinion is right?

Quote:

Main Entry: ge?nius
Etymology: Latin, tutelary spirit, natural inclinations, from gignere to beget
Date: 1513
1 a plural genii : an attendant spirit of a person or place b plural usually genii : a person who influences another for good or bad
2 : a strong leaning or inclination : PENCHANT
3 a : a peculiar, distinctive, or identifying character or spirit b : the associations and traditions of a place c : a personification or embodiment especially of a quality or condition
4 plural usually genii : SPIRIT, JINNI
5 plural usually geniuses a : a single strongly marked capacity or aptitude- had a genius for getting along with boys -- Mary Ross -b : extraordinary intellectual power especially as manifested in creative activity c : a person endowed with transcendent mental superiority; especially : a person with a very high intelligence quotient
synonym  - see GIFT

The above is from Merriam-Webster dictionary. By definition, it seems genius
has as much to do with natural ability and application of such in creative ways
(good or bad), as it does intellect.

An individual may possess a high IQ, but without the creativity to apply
and share their knowledge, they are about as useful as a library reference book
collecting dust on a shelf.

(IMHO) :smirk:

Peace to Everyone,

Peaceful Nomad

my friend is a self-proclaimed genius (he is serious about this) yet he failed a couple courses in university not long ago, go figure.

I think is a genious is a well-rounded individual who has a unique perspective of certain things.

I'd say most people have different definitions of genius. You'll know when you are experiencing genius when it happens. Like reading Nietzsche or listening to Hendrix. If it fits into your own definition of genius, you see genius. Some people hate electric guitar so to them, Henrix is no genius. Others might really love Ice Hockey and see Wayne Gretsky play and see genius.

A genius is someone who realizes the truth. That we are who we are and that we can do whatever we want to do if we believe in ourselves. They live life for themselves, to do what they want to do. They see through the fake bullshit that the rest of our race think is the truth. It usually takes some sort of intelligence to put all the pieces together to realize all this, so that is what makes me sure that this is a good explanation of what a genius is.

1...A genius is a stupid person, who thinks up stupid stuff that nobody believes in or listens to anyhoo.

2...But then time passes and relatively smart persons who've never heard of named dumbass begin to independently follow his line of reasoning.

3...A little later it's mainstream knowledge, the guy is rediscovered & labeled a genius.

The more time passes between 1 and 3, the bigger a genius he is. If people never catch up on his knowledge, he'll remain a dumbass forever.

Take Alexander Shulgin. Alot of us know he's a genius. Concensus has it he's an evil druglord, a mad professor of insanity provoking molecules.
Within 25 years he'll be celebrated as one of the true genius' of the 20th century.
That makes us smart, doesn't it

So Einstein was a stupid person?

thats a weird definition, that a genius is stupid.

I'd say if a person astounds you with an endless supply of brilliance, then they might be a genius

I don't really know how this term can be taken seriously at all.

People seem to figure a "genius" as someone intellectually superior than themselves.

I just find it to be a biological coincidence that some people just utilize their brain capacity alot more than others.

No two brains are alike.

Interesting that you brought that up.

I think people like Nietsche/Einstein/Pauling have great minds simply because they have the ability to think outside of the box. To a much greater extent than most of us would ever be able to imagine.

he was being facetious.

My idea of genius is just an uncanny accurate intuition for something. I think genius can be developed by anybody, granted they know how to put their mind to something and become intimately familiar with it. The child prodigies for example, They might be called A genius because they are naturals at concentration and contrast. Thus, they can excell at anything they put their mind to, no interfearence from other thoughts or psychic investments. Fireworks_god may have this idea imbedded in his post... Just my two cents on it anyhoo.
