if you look closely, there are two vastly different perspectives occuring at once in my post. To blend them is not to do away with duality, it is to deny the differences that co-exist. Yin and yang do not blend to make grey, they exist together to create the whole.

Hi Kickle, if that was in response to my post, just to clarrify I was saying in general, it wasn't specifically targeting anyone other than the thread topic and/or OP.

Gotcha

The Reply to: function can help these misunderstandings.

If there is a God, there would be no way to differentiate between the commandment of morality and the existence of morality.

If there is no God, this dilemma is not a dilemma at all.

I assume by "existence of morality" (contrasted with commandment of morality) you mean the existence of morality a priori to any god. But I can think of a possible (although admittedly tenuous) counterexample to your claim. If there is a god which is an active god in our world, we could know if god could change morality if we could observe god commanding one thing at one point in time, and something else contrary to the first commandment later on. Then we would know that what is good is good because god commands it, and not the other way around.

I'm not really trying to argue that case of course, but I don't think it's a foregone conclusion that there would be no way to differentiate, if we are speaking hypothetically.

Yeah, you're right. Someone who is looking for a God who exists outside of creation rather than a God who is creation could hold such a view.

God said, "Let there be light" and it was so.

According to Genesis God created light to shine on the earth before there was any source (sun). And there were days and nights before there was any sun.

God flunked science and sequential reasoning.

So I thought this was an interesting subject for discussion because it is something that both athiests and believers can explore and find philosophically stimulating.

This is the basic dilemma, as quoted from wikipedia (which provides a pretty good description):

"Is what is morally good commanded by God because it is morally good, or is it morally good because it is commanded by God?"

Now, if you do not believe in God, that's okay because you might interpret this dilemma as evidence against the existence of God as a source for morality. If you do believe in God (or perhaps many gods, with slight modifications to the premise), then this dilemma can provide you with an opportunity to explore the nature of morality in a manner which you previously had not considered. Take a side, but be careful because there are a number of issues with each position.

Morality depends upon the experience of pain and pleasure i think. So it's the result of experiences of feeling beings.
