Mother in law starts electroshock therapy tomorrow
    #12952723 -

Jesus I didnt even know they still did this. Theyre gonna put her under, paralyze her and shock her till she goes into seizures. Why they do this, I dont know. She said something about theyre trying to kill a certain part of her brain thats causing her problems. Creepy

They did this to me to try and stop my schizophrenia without medicine because my parents didnt want me taking a bunch of pills... they try to shock certain parts of your frontal lobe and hypothalamus to right the misfiring electrical impulses in your brain... it works for the most part but they don't really do it a whole lot anymore... something about more humane ways of treatment.

dude that shit is scary as fuck! they don't even really know what the fuck they are doing in there, its not a really precise treatment plan. i've heard it is like  scrambling your brain and hoping its re-wired in a more advantageous state...sounds like a pretty terrifying gamble to me...

Shes just a crazy old woman. It started 20 something years ago. She had a daughter that was 100% dependent. I cant think of the word for it. She was "aware" but couldnt talk or move. Her whole body was stiff as a board. She took care of her for 21 years. Her and her dads back started going out...getting old. They couldnt take care of her any more. They put her in a home, and she died 1 week later. After that, she just went down hill. Then doctors started playing "pill roulette" with her. Trying to even her out, loading more and more pills. Uppers to offset the loads of oxy and Valium. After years of all this she started to lose it.

So after fucking with her brain with pills...theyve decided whats best now is to shock the shit out of it. Genius.

My neuroscience internship involves a study of the cognitive side effects from ECT. It is actually highly effective for treatment resistant depression; most systematic reviews have found it to be superior to placebo and antidepressants. The primary cognitive side effect is retrograde amnesia, but this usually resolves within 6 months. Typically, the only memories prone to deterioration are those just prior and just after treatment.

The use of sine wave form is out-dated, but ultra-brief pulse and right uni-lateral electrode placement reduces some of the negative side effects.

It's only natural for our reactions to incorporate stereotypes, especially when they are being perpetuated in entertainment media. But it can actually be a God-send for people who have been struggling with depression for a long time. You will find more heart-warming stories than horror stories - but you have to dig deeper than Hollywood.

I'd really like to do this with my mother in law except without the putting under and paralyzing part.

ECT is for treatment-resistant depression. If prior treatments have failed, it could be a viable alternative. Besides, no one is forcing her or anyone else to undergo ECT. Like every other kind of medical treatment, there is a consent process.

Nah I agree. We've been reading a lot about it lately. It just seems so "eerie" to me. Its very jarring to think about, but after studying up a bit its not so bad. I guess its the literature of its "becoming" in the science field. It wasnt always so professional.

Visually and intellectually, treatment that induces a seizure admittedly appears counter-productive. But in the early beginnings they induced seizures with insulin shock therapy and then camphor extractions. Now, going beyond ECT, they have DBS (deep brain stimulation) and TMS (trans-cranial magnetic stimulation) which aim to preserve/enhance the efficacy while doing away with many of the side effects.

The history of its early beginnings is shady because some psychiatrists used it to mollify their patients instead of trying to heal them.
