Henry Rollins on rave and modern rock music

He is right :lmafo:

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

at least he plays an instrument and in a band even if he did steal most of the songs of Keith moorse.

He has a point , I think techno and other sampling shit isnt music its just shit.

I have taken E and K and I dont see whats so great about it. Hey lets dance and eat candy  oh i feel soooo good

i absolutely love henry rollins standup and spoken word.  I dunno he seems like such a real person.  some of his opinions i disagree with...

edit: whats so great about electronic music is a digital muscian's control over sound is theoretically infinite.  In practice melody and rhythm tend to be alot less complex in digital work, however the timbre of instruments in dance music especially is an incredible thing.  if you take something like just a kick sound, you will never find that level of perfection in someone playing a real drum kit.  Personally i also like the absolute purity of an electronic drum beat.  while it loses alot of subtle variation, human playing just feels wrong to me after so long listening to beats that perfectly timed.

electronic artists take each sound and figure out EXACTLY what in that sound produces a strong reaction.  Its not just one artist alone.  electronic muscians as a whole have been working for decades now to perfect different types of kicks, and thats why a super simple song like "a milli" can sell a million copies and drive people crazy.

i'm not even a master at all kick sounds and the amount of parameters i play with is frankly absurd.

the potential in electronic music has barely been scratched yet.  I dunno i'm kind of having trouble keeping it short and to the point.

There he goes again, speaking my mind for me.  No matter how much ecstasy or ketamine I do, rave music is still not "music" to me.  I don't enjoy  it, and I can't dance to it, but yet I still go to warehouse raves and clubs all the time just to hang out with my friends and do drugs.  It would be bitchin' if you could do drugs out in the open at places that play music that I like.

you can say disagreed, but a drummer isn't using a graphic EQ to go through every frequency of every drum sound.  He's not setting panning on each note, pitch on each note.  He's not adjusting the attack/sustain/decay/release of each note.  chopping up pieces of notes.  playing in perfect time.  He's not taking the cymbal and applying a carvern like reverb at just the 1000-9000hz range every third bar.

i dunno, it goes on and on like that.  i mean i understand different strokes for different folks, but in terms of pure intention, electronic musicians are way more concerned with the actual sound than people who play instruments.  I dunno, for me once i learned to listen for that stuff, i just can't listen to most analog stuff.

i mean, on albums you definitely get alot of that stuff, but again it has nothing to do with the actual drumming.

live you can get a tight sound guy, and lots of effects to give something a distinct quality, but it just doesn't match.

edit: i dunno, for me drum sounds and sub bass frequencies are really where digital completely clobbers real instruments.  I'd be willing to grant that for other stuff, real instruments have completely different harmonics and so on that basically can't be matched by digital reproduction.

this is true too... producers are the only peolpe that can produce sounds like that on a real drum kit.

This is an older video of him isnt it?

He went on a newer tour about a year ago during which he admits he was a cynical asshole.  Its pretty funny, hes making fun of himself but at the same time he has some pretty real insights.  Henry Rollins is a cool guy by me.

And also who said his music sucks? Black Flag, come on.

A drummer isn't doing all that because they require the skill to make the correct noise in real time.

I think a major reason for the hating of electronic music is the simple fact that alot of the stuff out there is just shit.

Of course theres a lot of good stuff too, but a loooott of popular electronic music is just garbage that leaves people with a bad taste in their mouths.
