I just got into an argument in a job interview

I was interviewing with Company X, it was the 2nd phone interview, and since they are a small company, I was speaking with the CEO.  About 5 minutes in, she asks what I know about the company.  I hadn't done much research, because I was expecting to learn more about the company through asking questions in this interview (it was not the final interview).

So I said "I know you provide X product and Y service, for the Z industry, regarding the financial side of their business."

She asked me more details and I said I didn't know.  She then proceeded to tell me I hadn't prepared enough for the interview, and started giving me advice.  I put up with this for a while, then she said something like "And based on your GPA, I can tell you're very smart.  I think you are somebody who is used to being smart, and as a matter a fact I think you could have done even better in your program"

So basically she was saying I don't try.  Well she is right on the money, but that doesn't mean I wasn't offended.  I said "I may be under-prepared for this interview, but for you to make a generalization about my entire college career based on this is insulting."

Then she was like, no, I was complimenting you by saying you could have done even better, because you're so smart.  I said that's a back-handed compliment and you're saying I don't try.  I told her I tried as hard as I could throughout college and then she said,"So you try in school but not when it comes to getting a job?"

I gotta admit she pissed me off but I like her blunt style, and I still would want to work there, haha.

You should've just said what you said here.. You were going to ask for more info during your phone interview because it wasn't the final one.

Come one man, you should know about the company before the very first interview, even if they are calling to set up the interview, you should be prepared to answer any questions they ask.  Atleast know the jist of the company so you can anser some questions.

I did say that.  I said I thought it would be more of a back-and-forth conversation in which I could ask questions about the company as well as answer questions. But to be fair it was the 2nd interview (3 stages of interviews for this one).

And no I didn't get the 3rd interview, she said "possible but unlikely"

Yeah probably should have done more research before the interview.
On the other hand, you probably could have turned that conversation more in your favor, by being more cordial and honest with her, instead of getting offended.. saying you were hoping to learn more from her firsthand about the company. Pump her ego up a little bit :smirk:
But at this point I would probably try to absorb all you can about it, and be determined in calling back and making sure she knows you are assertive and maybe you can change her mind.
