Best lid tek: polyfill or tyvek?
    #1284576 -

Looking for opinions on the best lid tek to use, tyvek or polyfill.  A FOAF would be using BRF, WBS, and very possibly rye berries in the near future.

Thanks kids

Ive heard polyfill seals back up after injecting since its like a cotton ball.
id use polyfill cause u can get a huge batch of it for 5 bucks at the pet stores.

Cost isn't really a factor. Tyvek is free, and polyfill might as well be. My Friend is mostly just wondering which is more effective and practical. Polyfill sounds nice since you can inject directly through it, but tyvek seems like it would cause less problems when shaking jars with grains.

Thanks for that very well verbalized response MM! You've officially sold my friend on polyfil. Now, let's say someone used polyfil lids with WBS or rye... do you have to worry about the bottom part of the polyfil ball (the part inside the jar) touching any grain when you shake the jar, thus increasing the possibility of contamination through the filter?

I used to use polyfil and I got ~10% contamination rate in my jars. Since I switched to tyvek I have had ~1% contamination rate. I think tyvek is the way to go.

I find that my grain jars with tyvek seem to dry out a little to much towards the end. Compared to my jars with polly. But maybe it is just my moisture content difference between the different batches.

I think that 10% might be dependent on how tight you
pack in the polly. I form the polly into a long yarn.
Then wrap it around a few fingers. Then loop a piece of thread through it. Then pull it through the hole.I then snip the part on the inside of the lid a few mm from the lid.

>As you can see Tyvek is marketed as a material that blocks out air and let's out humidity.

This is not quite true. Tyvek doesn?t block out air, it blocks out wind, fast moving air.
But it does let air through on a diffusion level.

Basicaly it can be used in the same way as the more expensive filter discs.

Here is a test I did:

i am really not wanting to argue. no, really. but damn, you did NOT think about that one did you? if it completely blocked out air then, inside the suit, you would not be able to breathe. and of course asbestos would be blocked because the particles (on a relative scale) are huge. again, i do not have a dog in this fight. i will not even post in this thread again. it's just that logic was so full of holes (smaller than asbestos? ) I couldn't resist.

edit: I don't even know if ANY of the above is true, I'm basing that response on the logic posted directly above.

I used polyfill, with spectacular results. Don't know Tyvek, never tried. You can even use a simple 1/4'' hole and have great results with Polyfill.

Search for my other post with my QT jars.

2 layers of tyvek, rough side out....smooth side in....or rough sides together....less moisture loss, less chance of contamination

Is that what you personally use? Which substrate? Anyone else try this?

It never ceases to amaze me, watching a contest of "wit & intellect".

Sadly, one party to this debate between Anno & MM has any & that "party" is ANNO.

However, arguing with a "fool"......... does nothing -- but associate you with one.

Let the multiple nick & IP "blow hard" blow. Who cares? Anybody in the know "knows" about him, anyway.

Stupid is as stupid does, or so Forest Gump......... told me.
