lid question

A FOAF was wondering if it's ok to use tyvek for the lid + use a hole with polyfill in the center? Should he inoculate through the polyfil material or punch a tiny hole in the tyvek and cover it with tape after inoculating?

yes it is possible but i do not advise it and i think it would be overkill.
you can innoculate throu polly fill, but if you innoc through tyvek you should tape over the innoculation point as it will not close on itself.

Why would it be overkill? Jars might dry out? That could be compensated for by maintaining a proper rh in the incubator i would think. I read anno's long thread about air exchange and it seems like it would help! Also my friend never used tyvek but from what i've read it sounds like it doesn't allow very much air through at all?

So, if he did do that would it be better to inject through the polyfil or poke a hole in the tyvek and cover it up after inoculating?

the reason i think it might be overkill is that one or the other should provide enough protection and both seems unnessecary.
i don't suppose it would hurt to try, although it verry well may make air exchange more difficult and thus slow colonization somewhat.

now, after re-reading your orrigional question, i am a little unclear as to exactly what you mean:
are you proposing to use both a tyvek filter and a lid with a pollyfill filter, or using a tyvek filter as the lid and putting a hole with pollyfill in the filter itself?

you can take either a lid with a hole filled with polyfill OR a lid with a tyvek filter under it

Either polyfill or tyvek, but both is too much and unnecessary.
