Milk, my best friend!
    #12822991 -

When I started weight lifting in 2006 I weighed 135 and I was 6'2. As time went on I eventually gained weight. I hit 165 around 2009. That is when I got stuck. I could not get past 165 and that was with creatine and protein powder. I did a 50 week program including 3 hypertrophy phases, 3 strength phases and one fatloss phase which I skipped. I got stronger but when I stopped the creatine I lost everything in a matter of weeks.

Then I decided to start fresh. This time I was doing the same 50 week plan without any supplement, pill or powder. My strategy was eating 4-5 meals a day. It was working pretty good, especially since I worked at a dinning hall. I eventually got up to around 170, but I could barely keep that and I was stuck. Around my first strength phase a guy I worked with told me about the milk strategy which I swear by today.

My plan changed. I kept eating my 4 meals a day, plenty of snacks and 1 gallon of whole milk a day for a month. In 3 months I went from around 165 to today at 193. After the one month of one gallon a day I continued to do just a half gallon a day. I admit that I put on fat, especially during strength programs, but not without progress. My overhead barbell push press was my most outstanding accomplishment. I can put 135 over my head these days, and that was not my max. Maybe its not impressive, but for me it is.

Anyways.. I am just finishing up hypertrophy 3 phase with rep changes including 4, 8, and 12. During my hypertrophy 3 phase I have been drinking 2% milk, maintaining my weight and losing my belly. Soon I will enter strength three.

During my strength 3 phase it will include wave loading reps of 3,2,1,3,2,1, targeting major muscle groups by using exercises such as squats, deadlifts, barbell push press, and bench press and pull ups. the phase also includes slightly higher reps for a couple follow up exercises. For the most part this is a maximum effort program within a short period of time. I am thinking about doing a gallon of whole milk a day for a month again to push my weight up to a hopeful 220. After the strength phase there is a follow up fatloss phase which will shed my belly and or excess fat.

Milk always seemed to help me in my strength programs. My bones felt repaired before each lift and I always feel energized. Lately I have been even taking a water bottle of milk to the gym with me while I lift.

My question is... Could all this milk be bad for me? I do not drink a gallon a day all my life. A gallon a day during certain periods then after that a half gallon a day.

My other question is.. What are some other weight gaining tips? Even at 190 pounds I am still a skinny guy, or so I feel. My ultimate goal is 250. My weighlifting goals are core. I want to keep working on my clean and jerks, eventually putting heavy weights over my head. As I feel the clean and jerk is the king of all lifts.

lets hear it?

I've read studies which evaluated recovery times of cyclists, which concluded that milk aids recovery time.

That's all i know - although i highly doubt a gallon/day for a month at a time would be harmful, i have read about others doing the same.

I started lifting in summer '09, and was 170lbs and I'm 6'0. Now after lifting 3-4 times a week for the past year, and doing cardio on off days I weigh 190.

I drink lots of milk too, but not that much:lol:

i drink from half a gallon to a gallon a day if it's around. i was always told it caused kidney stones (which i suffer from greatly) but seeing my kidney specialist lately said it's just an urban legend that milk causes kidney stones and to drink up all i want.

i also saw a special on tv recently that said chocolate milk might be the most refreshing beverage for those who are dehydrated.

i love milk and drink it tons, and my doctors have all said it's perfectly fine.

Yes, all that milk that comes from cows pumped up with antibiotics and genetically modified regenerative growth hormones could absolutely be causing you harm in the long run.  Bear in mind that Monsanto, the same nice folks who brought us DDT and Agent Orange, are providing the growth hormones.  Also they are deep into Genetically Modified Foods such as RoundupReady Soy and BT Corn which to say the least aren't a good thing to eat.

My uncle is a body builder and for a while he would purchase milk from a farmer. Rbst free growth hormone free -- all natural.

UNTIL THE GOVERNMENT MADE IT ILLEGAL......

I'm wary of milk.. but I do love chocolate milk.

A nice cold glass of raw unhomogenized unpasteurized milk with the cream on top. Yum.  Imagine ice cream made from that cream.

You can buy goat's milk but they aren't giving it away at $4.19 a Quart! where I live. I still buy it because at least I know it doesn't have rgh and it tastes so much better than cow's milk at least storebought that it's worth it to me in moderation.  This article is interesting but I do know that some "Organic" milk claimed to be rgh free has in fact been found to contain rgh.  Also the article addresses meat and hormones.
