Re: Copyright infringement notice? [Re: Triptonic]

I got one of these years ago when i was running a server on IRC. they said it was because i had "movies available for download."  They shut the internet off till we called them, then they sent a letter.  i've never had a problem at that house ever again. Of course, i switched up my methods a bit.

RP, don't even worry about it.  I've probably had at least 10 of those notices.  My internet isn't shut off and I haven't been to court ever.  I don't think they really take people to court any more, since you don't ever hear about it like you used to.

For those with Windows 7 use http://www.peerblock.com/releases instead of PeerGuardian.  It's basically the same thing, but works on new OS's without any problems.

It seems that this was just a scare tactic, they do that a lot.  However there is actually a big lawsuit just now getting started, thousands of people involved.

Half the time I'm using cogeco the other half bell. Bell's got slow speeds but no cap since our plan is old. Cogeco caps at 60gb unfortunately.

Same thing as peer guardian.  It blocks known IPs of people in the business of busting downloaders.

I guess it just blocks anyone whom you're downloading a torrent or whatever from, from getting your IP address and suing you.  Plus, I think it blocks virus'?  No sure about that one.  I think you just turn it on and let it do it's thing behind the scenes while you're downloading and then you turn it off when you're done.

I think.

That's close, kinda.

It's got a list of IP addresses and ranges from computers that are known to try to catch people in the act.  It just prevents them from connecting with your computer.  You still connect to some people who receive your IP address, as that's necessary to make the connection for the file transfer (unless you use a proxy).

But ya, turn it on when you're downloading, and turn it off when you're done.

What happens is the movie companys put copies of their movies up and if you download them they get your IP.

That's wrong.

They just scan through the torrents looking at who is downloading and uploading, recording the I.P. Addresses.

I got a letter one time for torrenting Battlefield 2. Got scared, called my ISP and found out it was a slap on the wrist.

A month later, I start using torrents again.. and I'm slammed with the same letter for BF2. Ends up I never deleted the torrent file, and this time I was in trouble for seeding to other people.

I'm pretty sure it is.

You are telling me they upload their own material (music, movies, software, including the cracks?), let people download it, then threaten them if they don't delete it (When it'd be impossible to confirm if they did or didn't)?

Each torrent is actually a file called a tracker, which is like a master list of computers connected to the server with the file. They literally just have to grab the I.P. addresses. You leave a footprint on every torrent you partake in.

Yes, I'm saying the company puts their own material on the web.

Thats why you look for trusted sources.

I'm aware of fake torrents, but actually containing legitimate contents and not fake files(aka what you wanted to download)?

When I got busted, I thought the tracker was legit. The game even worked. I was always under the assumption they saw my IP by possibly downloading/sending data with them, but not them putting up the files to begin with. IDK.

Yeah beats me too, I'm just spouting off on what I read about it on the web.
