Can you use Perlite instead of Vermiculite?? What are the major differences between the two??

if your thinking about substituting it in PF jars, won't work. perlite has many pores and has more surface area to release water. vermiculite holds water.

Yeah, like the big D said ^^^^^^, perlite is hydrophobic, meaning it gives off moisture, and verm retains water. Stick with verm for PF jars.

As far as I know the only practical use for perlite in this hobby is for humidification, although ive heard of some using it as the bottom casing layer. it would definately suck as a substrate
