Psychotria Leaf Cuttings - Easy Pictorial Tek * 4

I have Psychotria alba plants that I purchased as P. viridis.  I'm actually pretty happy with them because they grow relatively fast if I let them and are said to be less maintenance intensive.

Leaf propagation of these plants is very easy except that it takes a while before you see any results.  In this case I took the leaf cuttings around early winter and you can see what they look like today.  The keys to success are maintaining moisture (never let them dry out), humidity, and warmth.  For this batch of cuttings I pruned off ugly looking and contorted leaves from a larger plant to use for propagation.  Here's a picture of the mother plant from around the time I took this most recent batch of leaf cuttings (the mother is actually a result of leaf cuttings I took a couple years ago):


The process is very simple.  Pull off the leaf keeping the petiole intact (the stem attaching the leaf to the plant).  For me it usually comes off clean with no bits of stem and no parts of the petiole remaining on the stem.  I then cut the leaves in half to reduce transpiration.  I have seen people root plants successfully without doing this but I have had good success with cutting them in half and it's easier for me to fit more cuttings into one pot this way.  It also reduces my chances of snagging a shirt sleeve or elbow on a leaf during the long time it takes for these leaves to root.  Once you've prepared your leaf the way you like, just plant it petiole first into fairly moisture retentive soil and leave in a humid spot at a comfortable human temperature.  I use a humidity dome with heat mat, especially since I took these cuttings during the winter time.  Anywhere from 65-85°F seems to work just fine for rooting these but you can easily tell whether it's an ok temperature by asking yourself whether or not you would feel comfortable if your whole body were left at that temperature.

There are small insects crawling in the soil and a layer of algae and slime on the surface but the plants don't seem to mind.  They seem to prefer it this way.


Usually what happens is that the bottom of the petiole forms callous tissue followed by the formation of a shoot and roots.  Here's the healthy cuttings from the pot shown above and close-ups of their rooted bases:
           

You can easily tell things about the health of each cutting by whether or not the leaf has rotted and even then some rot can still lead to a plant that is just fine.  This cutting had some dieback and I noticed the bottom of the petiole also had some dieback.  Even so it has rooted from further up on the petiole:

After a while the leaf will die back completely and then is easy to pull out.  Now the problem is eventually they will get too big for any sort of practical humidity chamber.  You can still keep it healthy but it can be quite a bit of work if you don't have a good climate for them.  Misting helps as well as keeping them near other plants and keeping them warm.

I am by no means an expert and do not live in a tropical climate but I hope this is useful for someone.  You can see that the success rate is quite high on these.  I had one flat out fail and one that I uprooted too many times and it failed.  Other than that it's very easy.

It got repotted a while back but that's a picture of it when I took the cuttings.  I don't really have good space for it so have just let it mostly fend for itself.  It's ugly right now but starting to flower.
