I disagree, man, woman, child, sane, insane. Let the punishment fit the crime, not the person.

But then what's the point in punishment, if you aren't going to rehabilitate or deter, then it is mere revenge.

If that's all, then that's enough.

My response is the state did give birth to, in your words "the helpless and the abandoned" or "all those who can't find aid from private charities " , so why should the state be responisble for them?

I assume you meant to write "the state did NOT give birth . . ." You made the same flub in your original, incomprehensible post, which is why I asked you to repeat yourself. You could imagine my shock to discover that you couldn't get it right the second time, either.

Why should the state be responsible? Because a young, defenseless infant has a right to life, or at least a fighting chance at a life. Humane and decent societies recognize this and act accordingly.

If you are not in a position to have kids, don't have them. If you are pregnant
and have no interest in raising the baby, there are options available to you.

If that woman was competent, I think she was more than capable of leaving
the baby at a hospital, giving it up for adoption, or attempting to get her life
together.

Reread the post. I said she should be imprisoned for her actions.

And, as for your argument against the libertarians, you say that we condem
her for her actions, but refuse to give her help. I see nothing wrong with people
voluntarily helping this woman. I do see something wrong with my tax dollars
being taken away by force to subsidize other people and their mistakes that
I had nothing to do with.

How dare we demand that people support themselves and take responsibility for
their own lives and actions... We have such gall....

What actions exactly is a newborn infant supposed to take responsibility for? He or she is no more responsible for her mother's actions than you or I am. The difference is that, without aid, he or she will DIE because of her mother's actions whereas, with aid, you or I only undergo the inconvenience of having some of our income withheld. Don't like it? Move to India, where they DO let the kids die in the streets.

Ok, let me rephrase my statements. I lean towards the libertarian camp when
it comes to my political thinking, BUT I do support some things which could be
termed socialist(public education, caring for the mentally retard, etc..). One
of the things that I think should be taxpayer subsidized is caring for children
who have been abandoned.

incomprehensible post,

You are correct, I did intend to write "the state did NOT give birth", but you are incorrect in saying that I made the same "flub" in my origional post, I stated "But the state didn't get pregnant", what does the n't in didn't stand for?

That said, however, the self-righteous condemnation that the right wingers or
libertarians or whatever they want to call themselves are displaying on this thread is a
fucking joke, hypocricy at its height. If you would take away the state's capacity to
protect and care for the helpless and the abandoned, if you would leave all those who
can't find aid from private charities or individuals to die because the state shouldn't be
allowed to drop one red cent on anything other than policemen or soliders, then you're
consigning many innocent and defenseless children to die just as readily as that
woman did.

I can't remember anyone condemning the state's ability to care for the abandoned child, the only condemnation I saw was that of the woman's actions.

Why should the state be responsible? Because a young, defenseless infant has a right to life, or at least
a fighting chance at a life. Humane and decent societies recognize this and act accordingly.

I agree with you completely.

You're right, nobody explicitly did that, so I did venture off topic a bit. I apologize. But it is a fact that many people on the political forum have condemned the state's ability to care for abandoned or orphaned children in the past. Check this thread:
