how about the 'Noob Forum', anyone with under 100 posts will post q's there first. or make it the same probation period for the marketplace.

I support the wiki idea. Anything to make the information more accessible to noobs would help... people wouldn't ask stupid questions if the information was easy to find.

I like that idea. 100 is kinda a lot though. Maybe like 25.

And especially emphasis on UTSE.

Not to mention the wonderful; "Is my liquid culture contaminated" questions.

"Test it and use the damn search function!"

I like the idea of having that noob forum being the only one that someone with under 25 or 50 posts can access that is related to mushroom cultivation.  Maybe they would be allowed to access everything but the mushroom cultivation forum and the market place?

the 'noob forum' could have all the quick links to the most asked questions stickied at the top. there should also be a good list of teks for them to view as well.

some of the more veteran guys would have to promise to visit and answer questions from time to time though. i'd stop in and try and help. after all, most of the questions asked are easy one-line answers.

maybe a large search bar posted in the forum so it's easy to see and use.

how about a 10 main thread/ 30 day minimum. that way you know the stupid q's have already been asked. i can see alot of post containing  :feelsgoodman: just to move on. hence, the ten main thread minimum.

Ythan,

I agree for any busy forum a newbies forum is helpful.

On one of my forums, I admin, we have a newbies forum. With a tagline like:

Getting started
"A forum for all the new to the Shroomery. Don't be afraid to ask "dumb" questions here."

I think it is important to be welcoming (hence the dumb question remark) you in fact want the questions asked time and time again to be posted there, it stops the rest of the forum rabble complain about newbie questions and at times giving abuse to them. the normal forum members are happy and the newbies are happy as they get little abuse.
I would look at making the forums frown on gen(eral) mem(bers) that do post more abusive comments there.

For this forum make a few stickies at the top.

Place this sub-forum at the top of the forum list. This is important too. It should be the first port of call. (sorry The Psychedelic Experience regulars)

Assign a mod(s) to forum that is friendly first and knowledgable second. Someone that will take seemingly simple questions.

Once you have this forum for a focus for there will be more and more questions that are obvious for new people to the scene. You will get a good understanding of what question really are useful.

Then maybe a FAQ forum or forums greatest hits like we have on forums.winamp.com as a non-editable pages where only mods can post in and make threads. It is a useful reference point.

Also teh wiki as other have mentioned. However don't you already have a wiki pages here:
http://www.shroomery.org/1/Mushroom-Info

Hope this helps.

i agree, it should be at the top of the list. personally i think the experience forum should be in the general interest section. it doesn't really have much to do with the mycology aspect of the site. really i feel that having that at the top is kinda shitty. the first topic on the list is people talking about getting fucked up all the time. then your expected to take the rest of the site seriously.

I'd like to help new users ease into the community with a "Getting Started" forum. The idea is to provide a friendly environment which introduces people to our site and offers straightforward answers for simple questions. So anyway, like the subject says I was wondering what common themes you keep seeing over and over again in posts from inexperienced users. What are the most common things that make you want to just say "UTFSE"? What fundamental misunderstandings do you see most frequently? Hopefully we can address these questions directly, or do a better job explaining how people can use the tools we provide to find their own information. Basically, what do you think we should include in "Shroomery 101"?

that's funny, i just re read the OP. i think everybody got off topic for a while and now we've come full circle!

ythan needs advice on what to INCLUDE in the getting started forum. not how to handle noobs. he already has the forum in mind, we just need to offer good suggestions on what to fill it up with.

sorry about that ythan!:crazy2:

Now that is an idea! How about just a overall psychedelic wiki. :mushroom2:

pleease can we get started on a myco-pedia?  it doesn't have to be an all-out shroomery related thing, just shroomery members getting together to make something better (for instructional purposes, to go along with shroomery)  I don't know how to create an independent mushroom cultivation wikipedia thing separate, but we should get even a small group of people together and just slowly start adding teks and categorizing everything.

it would end up like the best instructional book you could buy

does anyone know how to do that and what do you think?

Yes I would definitely have to agree with this. It seems that many TEKs and other related things seem to get lost into the bottomless pit of the forums.

Also about a earlier post about making people feel comfortable to make posts asking "Dumb" questions. In my personal opinion they should be well informed to use the search function in the first place as that will answer 99% of "Dumb" questions and save both the poster and respondent time. Saving the posts for "Dumb" clarifications.

I don't have time to start working on it now, but you can start a wiki here:

http://www.wiki.com/startyourown.htm

I think it's a great idea and can turn out to be immensely useful if we keep it updated.

Make it so the search function by default only shows one result per thread.
I know when I first started lurking on this site, looking for answers and whatnot, the amount of results I would get when searching through forums would be pretty overwhelming.

Also, a way more organized wiki-like page for all the info pages (FAQS, Growing Guides, Teks... ect) would help out a lot. Most of the time I would rather go to this site for those sort of things than erowid or a1b2c3.com simply because those sites have a lot of outdated info. Thus, making it a bit more organized would help a lot.

that looks good, but it's not really affiliated with wikipedia, and it says its only a 30 day trial until we start to have to pay

i would like to get an idea of how many knowledgeable users would want to help out just a little bit even.

I've created a wiki for PNW mushrooms (see my signature) in the past.  At first wikidot was a great free wiki host, but since I built that site they've started adding more and more advertisements to the page that you can't get rid of.  annoying...

Anyway.. I'm fairly fluent in wiki... so if I could be of any assistance let me know.

We do have The Shroomery Mushroom Glossary that many find useful.

I was going to suggest a glossary of terms, because until you linked that, I've never found it.
Took me days to figure out what some of our obscure terminology meant when I first joined.

Also, that glossary is a bit...sparten. It doesn't have "monotub". Or "shotgun". Or "Tyvek"-just to name a few obvious ones...

Ythan, I think one thing a newbie forum needs is a proper, stickied, up-to-date glossary on all terms-hell, even go the whole hog and have definitions linked to appropriate teks.

That's pretty much ground level for any newbie starting the hobby-understanding the words!

Dictionary / Word list that includes common abbreviations and synonyms.

Eg: Metabolites would include "myc piss" as a synonym with a note about not using it ever.

However, listing it just the same makes searching easier - a lot of using the search engine is knowing what words you should be looking for.

If you don't know what things are called, your searches won't turn up anything.
