We do have The Shroomery Mushroom Glossary that many find useful.

honestly ythan, when i first came here i poured through the main site and all of it's topics and faq's. i still do from time to time.

without a doubt there is good info there but.............

it's outdated and unorganized. it really could use a good housecleaning and revamp to make it more user friendly and appealing to new users. you have a ton of info out there, everything you need is already here, it just needs a new format. it's kinda 'choppy' and not the easiest to navigate. i mean it's setup OK but could be a little more noob oriented i.e., better table of contents, more pictures with up to date info and teks.

also a good list of useful easy to find teks. there sure is a lot of junk, illegitimate teks out there floating around.

maybe you should start a campaign or contest for members to create well written, understandable and up to date teks. outsource that shit to us and maybe have votes or contests for the best teks and give out shirts or memberships or something. i'd be into it!

Oh yea, get rid of the people on the forum that just post " use the search over and over " . Seriously, if you can't add anything constructive then don't post. If everyone used the search function then you wouldn't have any reason to post, so be thankful they are asking questions :|

I'm sorry but that is bullshit.  Basically you're saying that the older, more experienced members should do all the work for you.  Telling someone to use the search function is a good thing.  Have you ever used it?  There's years worth of good information.  I use it everyday and not once have I came away not learning about what I was searching for.  People get tired of answering the same questions over and over.  I have been posting here for less than a year and in that time I've seen the same 5 questions over and over and over.  It's incredibly annoying and unnecessary.

I like the FAQ read this first type approach. One on life cycle, one on the PF tec, How to find cultivation tools in the home/hardware environment, etc. Sweet and simple. A good glossary of terms and abbreviation. Maybe a noob Q and A forum and the experienced cultivators would volunteer to rotate slots to answer Q+A.

Ythan I would also just like to thank you for putting up such a great site and giving folks like me not only a home but a place to contribute back to something that has given me so much....Thanks:thumbup:

The cynical side of me thinks there is no way we can get newbs from asking the same questions over an over again. People like to make posts and ask questions a lot more than doing a search and reading. :picard:

I think guidelines broken down into sections would be useful.

Like what is or is not okay in Mushrooms..., Community, and General Interest. Then break it down a little more. What the Pub is for, what OTD is for, why a user should UTFSE before posting in mycology forums, why someone should use the MAL forum for MAL things. Shit like that.

Then basic features of the site that many other places don't have or at least don't work the same. Quick reply, BB tags, how to use graemlins (this always takes me longer to figure out than it should on many message boards), or other features that seem intuitive to us but are frequently misused or unnoticed to new members. For example it took me damn near a year to realize the little search bar at the bottom was completely different (and damned near useless) than the "Search Posts" link in the top tool bar. So I would search and find nothing, make a thread, then get "UTFSE" in response and I would be all "LIEK WTF I DID?!?!" and then I would be called a n00b. Which in my eyes was reasonable but things like that can be frustrating to some new users.

So yeah basically a section for... etiquette? and then a section for features or the site.

I think with a couple of collaborated stickies for a general 'catch-all' forum could include:
- A General Basic Welcome, Here's How Community Works, FAQ threads
- Cultivation Basics + teks galore + common question answers for different categories.
Basically, How to-UTFSE, how to upload pics, and show off the cool ass features.

Ok! i really didn't know and had to google it! how much of a noob am i? but i hope this clears it up for a lot of people as it is being said a lot here in this post and others!

The meaning of UTFSE acronym is "Use The Fucking Search Engine".

I think this is a fantastic idea!  I would second the idea of a shroomery wiki.  If that doesn't happen in this round of reforms, I'm going to make one myself.

In terms of the forum itself, I think we should include a "101" sticky for a few important subjects, and post links to threads and archived teks that pertain to that subject.  For example, in the "PF Tek 101" sticky, you could link to the classic pf tek from the archives, some threads where people have explained the pf tek in their own words, and finally some impressive grows using the pf tek.

I also think that the following thread should be included somewhere, except it's name should be changed to "General Mushroom Cultivation 101".

omg can you imagine the arguments that would ensue as people edit over each other! this sounds like a non-starter to me.

Perhaps a only select people could be allowed to edit the wiki, or maybe an edit has to be approved by a certain amount of people before it is allowed to go through?

maybe only TC's

however, there is way too much contradictory information to actually create definitive entries.

To me the shroomery is place where you can see hands on experience and discussion. The search function will pop up real people discussing the matters of the topic. Some articulate and detailed, some absolute shit. "Real encounters" of the subjects used in the search.  Some questions about this subject can only be answered by someone that has experienced it.

New members would be just plain narrow minded and ignorant if they thought this place was the only place to find info on shrooms or other info on psychedelics.

Not kissing ass or anything and im not saying that a new member forum is a bad idea. But, this is a great site now and always has been. Thats why im still here.:sunny:

how would this be diff than the forum then?

wouldn't improving navigation on the site be a simpler solution?

It would I guess, but I don't see anywhere on the site where I can rate or add to a tek in a way that matters.  I think having a direct edit option would be a good thing, but like you said, it could lead to problems.  If we could overcome these problems, it could be great though.

Easy Button: Make new members take a test on shrooms and using the search function before they are able to post.:hehehe:

When you go to a page of teks from the cultivation section of where it says Mushroom Information, there is a place at the bottom to submit a tek. And when you view a tek you can rate it.

The navigation is obscure, but its there.

These other suggestions of requiring noobs to jump thru new hoops are questionable. Seems to me the more difficult you make it, the more likely they are to use a different site. I still don't understand the problem with having a forum where people can ask whatever they want. What is the negative? People ask the same questions? so what?
