What curriculum would you recommend for "Shroomery 101"? * 9
    #12432317 -

I'd like to help new users ease into the community with a "Getting Started" forum. The idea is to provide a friendly environment which introduces people to our site and offers straightforward answers for simple questions. So anyway, like the subject says I was wondering what common themes you keep seeing over and over again in posts from inexperienced users. What are the most common things that make you want to just say "UTFSE"? What fundamental misunderstandings do you see most frequently? Hopefully we can address these questions directly, or do a better job explaining how people can use the tools we provide to find their own information. Basically, what do you think we should include in "Shroomery 101"?

This is such a good idea.  I hope you can come up with a good way to get people to actually use the beginner resources you put together.

keep it simple mate, and just make it for info only no thread hijacking with stories about guns or trips or thier grandmothers funny goat.

no utfse answers

if replying then post a link to the info requested or offer suggestions for keywords for the search engine

try and keep the exasperation to a minimum as it is off putting to a newbie to feel like he/she just annoyed everyone.

as stickies perhaps a comprehensive region guide(or link to)
a season guide (or link to)
a law guide    (or link to)
a health guide  (or link to)

make sure you put in your rules and in a perfect world perhaps you could have some of the more friendly experienced members be the answer genie for a week here or there.

Obviously there is a lot of thick fuckers out there who are going to ask where to score and locations of specific patches but i dont think you'll ever rid yourself of complete stupidity (I am example number 1)

these are just newbie suggestions and I hope they are not too stupid.

cheers

As far as Mushroom Hunting and Identification goes:

An overview on how to find Psilocybin mushrooms

and something along the lines of this:

ShockValue said:
OP:  This is how things work;

Step 1:  Read this - http://www.shroomery.org/8461/Which-psilocybin-mushrooms-grow-wild-in-my-area

Step 2: Familiarize yourself with the mushrooms that appear on the above list for your area.  Pay close attention to what season they grow and in what habitat they prefer.  This will narrow your search considerably.

Try these sites for reference:
http://www.shroomery.org/6236/PHOTOS-DESCRIPTIONS-AND-HABITATS-OF-MANY-PSILOCYBIN-CONTAINING-SPECIES
http://books.google.com/books?id=3u-DyDXgQiEC&pg=PA122&lpg=PA122&dq=Psilocybe+Liniformans+Var+Americana&source=bl&ots=koNLjh59zj&sig=hVGzpQoqJFFobP-EIoaAdzmoFN0&hl=en&ei=378kSq3-N6fEtAOU0rmPBg&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=6#v=onepage&q=Psilocybe%20Liniformans%20Var%20Americana&f=false
http://psychoactive.wikidot.com/

Step 3: Read this too http://www.shroomery.org/6235/Mushroom-Hunting-FAQ

Step 4:  Find some mushrooms that you suspect might be active or of interest.  Take GOOD pictures of them, including the cap, stem, gills and if possible, habitat.

Step 5: Post and ID request with these specifications: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/2263556

Picking random mushrooms and hoping they're active is going to be a waste of time and frustrating.  You're chances of getting one like that are about the same as winning the lotto.  Good news is that unlike the lotto, with research and effort you can actually increase your odds significantly!

Make sure people read the rules before becoming an active member by requiring a 5 question quiz over the rules of the shroomery you must get correctly answer 100 percent and you can't register for ten days if you answer a question incorrectly until you get 100% correct answers!
Here are a few examples;

1.How long should you wait to bump your threads and why?

2.If I forgot to mention something in my previous post, relating to my original post/question. Is there something I can do besides make a new thread or follow my post immediately with another post and question, and how?

3.What are the 3 recommended reads before asking any questions in the cult forums?

4.How do you use the shroomery's search engine?

5. Where do you check if you need help with mushroom and mycology terms?

6. What are 2 reasons your threads will be locked?

What I miss..
Should new members be require to pass a 5 question quiz 100 percent correctly before becomeing a new member, and should there possibly be a ten day grace period for people who answer the incorrectly 100 percent, of ten days before being eligible to sign up again?
