What causes abhorts on PF cakes?
    #1241697 - 01/23/03 05:27 AM (14 years, 1 month ago)

There are some PF cakes sitting in a ten-gallon aquarium on moist perlite, and it seems like they have a lot of abhorts - each cake is only yielding about two or three good fruits per flush, and a whole mess of abhorts (10-20).

Is the humidity too high? The humidity is always around 95%, there is good oxygen exchange through an air pump, the temp is about 67-71F. They get light from a 15w blue light at the top of the aquarium about eight hours a day.

This is B+ from sporeworks. Thanks for any advice doods . . .

my first guess would be that it's your lighting condition. mushrooms don't need light to grow they just need it to sence where they are in the world.
i've always done it with natural light, remember just so you can see your hand is enough light for mushrooms. Other than that it might be the substrate recipie.
the rest seems sound.

P.S. fuck you for getting that many a cake! i got maybe one fruit a week LOL but then again i suck.

Raise the temp to 75, and fan at least 3 times a day - i bet your airpump doesn't shift that much air.

Do you have holes near the base of the terrarium for CO2 escape?

in general, aborts can happen for many reasons.

in my experience, the main cause of many aborts is the insufficient air-exchange.

do the followin test:

let your system work for 3 hours without opening the terrarium.
then open it and put your head inside LOL if you can smell the familiar healthy mycelium smell, then you need a better air-exchange.

i agree . remember co2 is heavier then oxigen . if you don't have a vent near the bottom you should fan about 3 times a day . a paper plate works well .

I believe that aborts are caused by humidity and air exchange problems.

In your case probably...air exchange.

You need to get the CO2 out of the bottom of your fruiting chamber.

Might try raising your temps up too.

I fully agree with the above. As I case I have started with the practice of holes about 1 cm from the top layer of casing, got rid of my co2 problems.

Hmmm, I have an air pump (the little one, the size they recommend for ten gallon aquariums) pumping through a line of tubing that I punched a bunch of holes in and buried under the wet perlite. It's soundin' like I need more oxygen tho.
