As promised, step-by-step ghetto glovebox! * 1
    #12411544 -

Greets, all. I was inquiring not long ago about methods used in getting clean holes in the plastic bins we all use and love. Major shout-out to 13shrooms, who provided some choice advice for those of us who don't have tools for every job. His method will be detailed here, along with the original ghetto glove box tek found here: http://www.shroomery.org/9457/Ghetto-Chamber-TekĀ ; (though it's simple as can be, which is what makes it so great!)

Anywho, here we go.

Started with this stuff:

Tub
Sealant (caulk, epoxy, whatever. I might go back over it with caulk)
Gloves
2 Toilet Flanges (Home Depot)
Coffee can
Pliers (not pictured)
Sharpie
Gorilla/duct tape (also not pictured)

I chose the long tub for more area to work with, seems comfortable enough. I also chose to use 2 part plastic epoxy as a sealant as opposed to screws, as I didn't have any screws and the rings fit into the hole quite snugly. Note the coffee can, that is a crucial ingredient. This size fit for my arms perfectly, and as mentioned earlier the rings as well.

Anywho, onto the procedure!

Begin by putting on your wizard robe and hat. :vaped:

Once you're prepared, use your sharpie to mark where you want the holes to be on your tub. I'd recommend tracing the coffee can, though it's a bit tough to keep it steady on the slippery plastic. Here's 13shrooms' smart bit: Get your coffee can. Make sure it's empty. Remove any labeling, and put it on your stove. (turned all the way up)

Careful. It's fucking hot.

Get your pliers, grab the can and push the cooked end up against where you want your holes. Give it a little twist, and some encouragement. I recommend washing the can/scrubbing the bottom in between uses, to avoid getting melted plastic all over your stove. You might have to twist the circles you made to get them clear and out, but should be a lot easier than any other method.

Anyway, shove your fittings in the holes (oh, baby) and seal'em up however you prefer. Get your gloves, make sure you don't be a stooge and try them on and get them into position before you tape'em. I like to use gorilla tape, it's definitely more adhesive than duct tape.

Perhaps it'd be best to do another seal and another stretch of tape, just to be safe. It is kind of a bitch getting your hands all the way in there, and all the way out.

Enjoy, and thanks again 13shrooms! Made my life much easier.

My buddy used to have attached gloves, but found they were a huge hassle, especially when transporting things in and out of the box. He ended up chopping them off and using tyvek sleeves.

Cool pics anyway though.

the best hole cutting method i've seen was figured out by my friend who works in a sign shop. he helped me do some tubs and was like this isn't working let's try this. so we tried it and voila! works awsome. and fast.

take a heat gun. you can buy a cheap jobmate heat gun for 35 bux. take a carpenter's knife. draw your circles, take the heat gun to the lines you just drew, hold the gun about 2 inches away from plastic so it won't warp. u will find the sweet spot... heat for a few seconds. turn off gun and set it down DO NOT TRY TO HOLD BOTH GUN AND KNIFE AT SAME TIME AND CUT. quickly take carpenter's knife to the hole, should be able to do one hole with only heating it 2 times for a few seconds around the line. just guide the heat gun over the line you drew. plastic comes off the knife easier. and you don't have to worry about melting smoke this way, there is none.

Tyvek sleeves eh? I'd love to see a picture of that, if you can manage one.

Agreed.  I ended up leaving the PVC connector pieces in place because when I was finished I could just place the gloves I used over the holes to keep everything protected inside.

My first glovebox looked very similar to the one you made.  Nice work on the pictorial.

No picture needed. Just get a Tyvek painter's suit from Lowe's or Home Depot, chop off the sleeves, done. Let's Grow Mushrooms! video has the guy wearing them while he's working in his glovebox.

The Dupont branded suit (has a sticker on the chest) is the best one, it has elastic in the sleeves. I think that's a Home Depot specialty.

Tyvek sleeves are great (you use them in conjunction with gloves) and I used them while I was still able to get them for free from where I work. They do not just come off of Tyvek suits as stated above.  But instead of ordering them I now use cheap Polypro shoulder length gloves from the local Feed & Seed which are cheaper than the sleeves.  I put a pair of nitrile gloves over the Polypro gloves when I am working in the glovebox though because the fingers are to bulky otherwise.  Finding these shoulder-length gloves is easy; ordering tyvek sleeves is an unnecessary cost.....but you sure don't get as sweaty working in good Tyvek sleeves, so if you don't mind the cost.... ~P~

They don't? Well, the ones my friend uses are sleeves, made out of Tyvek..so they're Tyvek sleeves. How are the ones you are talking about different?

Not calling you out, just curious.

You could just cut the sleeves off of the suit but they won't stay up your arm very well unless you rubber band them in place.  The sleeves sold separately have elastic in the wrist and at the part that grabs around your elbow so they stay in place.

As an added note these things are great because you can wash them with cloths and spray them with Lysol or any other cleaning agent when you're working with them.

They come in a box by themselves and have an elastic cuff on both ends.  In a laboratory setting (iam just an entry-level technician, nothing to fancy yet) I pull the Tyvek sleeves over the sleeves of my white lab coat then put nitrile gloves on (we call them "Popeye arms").  When we get contamed batches at work (yes, i have to deal with contams at work to; I know, shitty right?) we ditch the sleeves and lab coats and have to go into head-to-toe tyvek suits and shoes. ~P~

Aha. Well I guess to make them scientific, one could sew elastic into the back end and make both ends fit snugly that way. Thanks for the tips.
