michigan morels 2010 season has begun!

these guys popped up overnight, first morels of the year, even tho they appear a bit grey, they are common blacks, when they are this small they are usually grey. by end of the week they should 5 to 6 inches. no one else i know has found any morels yet in my area.

it rained 3 days ago and last night prior to this it was dry/warm spell for 2 weeks the morels were found sprouting from mossy clumps in the valleys of large hills, at a higher elevation than normal for this time of year. the plant growth is behind by about a week or two, no vegetation or other soil mushrooms are growing yet.

Ive been looking in ohio with no luck yet but I know Michigan is a sweet spot for them. My grandpa used to go there every year and come home with shit tons. Nice find tho.

We're probably not going back out until this weekend, it's supposed to be a rainy week, so hopefully the morels will be a 'pickable' size by then.

after months and months of not being able to go hunting, finding a rat turd morel was exhilarating, it was difficult not to pick them, but picking morels that size is mushroom abuse.

morels are just an edible with too much hype, there absolutely tasty, and i guess are the most picked mushroom in the states, because of their easy id, and that they are elusive, they sell in markets, and appear in many dreams....

Indeed. I don't eat them though, I just like to find them. It's more magical when you don't know where the "spots" are; after a few years of knowing where they are going to pop up, it takes away from the element of surprise. It's still fun though, especially when you look for new "spots."

i think some of my relatives and friends have started a collection of my dried canned morels from past years, i find few who really appreciate them, but its a great gift to share.

Well thats crazy I love these things I would probly eat them every day if I could but I cant ever find them. Guess maybe I should act like I hate them and they will show themselves to me lol.

What? I still have much respect for mushrooms. I enjoy the flavors, I just don't eat the fruit bodies themselves. I especially like mushroom and leek broth. :tongue2:

We went back out today, and I got some pictures. The morels are still tiny - about 1/2 inch to 1 inch tall.

Nice I've never found any blacks before. I notice the landscape looks a bit different than were i find blonds and grays Did you find them by a elm?
