I went camping with my kid, my girlfriend, and her parents in northern Michigan, we just got back with about 250 blacks:thumbup:
it was really dry but we found a decent amount we were only hunting for about 12 hours, i got a bunch of beefsteaks and false ones too, are they ever safe to eat? Ive heard some people can eat them and some cant, is eating one the only way to find out? and if so is it worth it? probably not....anyway ill have pictures tomorrow

why would you want to eat a fake morel anyway? do they still taste good?

i have no idea but i dont think it is worth trying, ive heard some people can eat them, after they have been cooked, same with the beefsteaks, it is probably all bullshit though and even if it doesnt kill me it would probably suck...alot!

Some people eat the false ones for years and then eat a batch that kills them, either from being more toxic or not cooking them properly - I'm not sure. People have also gotten sick from the fumes given off when cooking false morels. For that matter, regular morels can be quite toxic when raw, and I believe that people have gotten ill when cooking them as well.

My understanding of the beefsteak was it contains a small, yet variable amount of a toxin that never leaves the body... when the toxin reaches a certain level that meal will be your last. I read that last year, I don't remember the source, perhaps morels.com or michigan morels.com, but either way i'd avoid eating the beefsteaks, for you and your loved ones safety...
