AS of today April 12, 7 days ago yesterday I found the first reported morel of northern Michigan. last year it took 13 days after the frost broke to bear a fruit, this is a typical pattern (in 09'14days, 08'13 days......05' was 12days, and 98' was 16). After this years heavy snow fall that blanked the forest without thaw until late spring brought water retention to a max, the weather should turn warm quick this week, the water run off is already at a max compared to last years spring drought, lots of water and a warmer thaw means;
 northern michigan's morel season will start with a bast of blacks, in 10-14 days. hunting wont be good for 18-22 days (i wouldn't even check unless your just checking not picking) this year is late and later than last, the season is progressing later and longer. little to most pickers eyes the seasons are running longer, morels up until July, (the vegetation becomes fierce). This year the bugs will be out in prolific infestations, please inspect your mushrooms on the spot, if they have fleas, leave them there or bury the mushroom there, and get out of that area, 300sqyards typically, morel fleas spread by pickers, please don't spread them. the slugs, gnats larvae, and others will be in high numbers, with warm wet you get bugs, and the bug cycle is peaking. the thick foots will be huge this year, I feel a record single fruit weight coming, as the season progresses we will see high humidity and cool blasts that will keep em growing. its a fight with the bugs this year.

please remember good picking practices; 1)mesh bags are a joke! a mushroom releases its spores in a puff, witch is highly unlikely to happen while your walking, so hang a mushroom in a tree it will start to dry and puff its spores out, with the advantage of height you will be successfully spreading spores and aiding the fungus. 2) find new areas dont over pick, leave some for nature. 3) bring a friend and be prepared(food,water,boy scout stuff) mushroom hunting will turn you in circles. 4) stay away from my patches!!!! just kiddin, i welcome anyone who wants to come, as long as i would want to walk with them that is.....
it will be a good season its 7th year cusp of the great morel cycle.

Man Im soo excited for this years hunt. It will be my first I've been gearing up with as much knowledge as possible. Hardwoods Hosts like Dead Elm,Ash,Poplar,Aspen etc. Walking slow and standing around scanning using your foveal view. Circuling the perimeter where you find a patch. Rich black sandy soil. Early in the season checking southern facing slopes later in the seaon northern facing slopes. I hope I can make it up to the Boyne City Morel Festival. I live in SW MI so it shouldnt be too hard to get up there.

here is the #1 tip on finding morels...
find morel hunters!, look for them parkede on the side of the road on or near state land, if you can identify hunters, then follow loosely behind, or is what i do is jog past them as if i knew where they r heading, also, if you want to be alone,,just go back when they r gone. most people think why, all the mushies be pick if i follow hunters, well that be impossible, and hunters go to the mushies.

I might be going with a seasoned vet in my area. I went out today to find some good sights. Behind my house there is a small patch of woods with nothing but hardwoods the soil seems right. Now all I have to do is wait for the temp to hit the around 55 and its time!

I have a friend who lives about 2 hours North of trigger and I, and he saw a teeny-tiny little beefsteak mushroom a couple of days ago.
BUT
...Northern Michigan is STILL getting snow! We had a blizzard today in our area, though none of it really stuck around.

I went looking today in the woods and the park and found nothing, but I'm a n00b and don't know where they've been found in my area. Maybe I should check the state park. I live downstate more towards Detroit, but I don't know where around me they grow. I need to find somebody around here, or somebody who can tell me where they found them around here. Anyway, I'll get one sometime.
