Ohio Morels

Okay so the only real reason for this thread is for discussion on Ohio Morels. This will be my first year joining in the hunt for this mushroom and I am really looking forward to it. I just wanted to see if their were any other experienced morel hunters out their who could share any advice or information with me that may be helpful. My range I will personally be hunting in is central Ohio, stretching down to the hocking hills area where i have more access to land to hunt on. Are their any other Ohio hunters out there?

Ohio is a great place for morels.  I find a lot under elm, apple and tulip poplar there.

Very nice. I suppose I'm just gonna have to go out and learn from experience though i have read they hang around certain trees. Can you tell me the specific species i'd be looking for?

Black Morels - Morchella elata group  (first)
Then Half Free Morels Morchella semilibra
Then Yellow Morels Morchella esculenta

There are a few other species that grow in the area like M. deliciosa  but prehaps these 4 are the most common.

The name Morchella esculenta does not accurately apply to North American yellow morels. That name belongs to European morels which are probably not even the common yellow morels which occur there. According to my understanding they should fall into:

1.) one of at least two taxa in our "deliciosa" group; distributed in the eastern part of the country, usually more or less conical in their caps or at least pointed at their tips. associated with hickory, ash, tulip, etc.

2.) Morchella rufobrunnea, the widely distributed disturbed ground/landscaping morel.

3.) the variable, frequently irregular and round-tipped 'esculenta' group which are widely distributed, and tend to display random arrangement/orientation of their pits and ridges. associated with ash, elm, orchard trees, etc.

4.) anything i'm leaving out because i've forgotten or do not know.

the first and second group of these are known for quite variable tree species associations.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

I agree with but they will be listed as M. esculenta in vast majority of the field Guides here.  There a good number of larger looking yellow morels that grow here, that have not even been described.  With in the last month we just got a new record of New species of yellow type morel from Michigan that never previously been reported from north america and only recently described from europe.  There are several other yellow type type morels (eastern us)that are just now being studdied that also apear to be new species one of which grows in association with pine.

In the north eastern United states it now appears that we a different species of landscaping morel, not enough is know yet to tell exactly how many species of landscaping morels in the north east. From what I can tell so far it looks like it can be easily visually told apart from M. rufobrunnea

if venture to a morel fest, come bs with the dude selling morels, and chainsaw morlels, if there is several like so, then im the one with the real looking carved morles, bears gaters and watnot too.

i could tell ya from a pic, there are at least a hundred morel chainsaw carvers in the US, every year my father and i sell about 1000, mostly in mich, a few fests in ohio, and indiana.

boyne city and mesic have the best morel fests, mesic claimes to be the world capital for morels, i would say vanderbelt is...
anyone who loves morels should come to the fest, i think first and 2nd week in may...

i am stoked for this year's morel season!  the weather is not permitting yet here in central ohio.  my in-laws own a huge farm along a river, with lots of elms and wooded areas.  my wife and i are going to hunt when the weather breaks, bc this cold and snow is not helping.

Very nice I'm gonna go for a nice walk today but and maybe find something after all the rain we have gotten and were in the 60's atm so might be good, but i still dont know much i just got my field guide. Maybe i'll have pics when i get back.

went out along a river here in central ohio, but only found other wood-dwelling mushrooms.  headed back out to a better location on thursday.  hopefully it will prove better results. :thumbup:
