Ohio Morels! *Updated Finds*
    #4110382 - 04/29/05 11:37 AM (11 years, 7 months ago)

My first mushroom hunt was a success! Found a really beautiful patch of these guys this morning.

Some more discoveries the next day, although mostly non-morel, I though you all might like the shots:

I don't think anyone can tell you for sure.
Normally, a knife would be used to protect the mycelial mat from being torn up but in this case morels fruit from a sclerotia which may or may not be connected to mycelium anymore. Just not much is known about morels.
But in any case, when picking mushrooms from the wild using a knife is the way to go, unless you want to spend all day cleaning mushrooms from the dirt and crap that gets in your bag.

Peace

I say cut right at ground level with a knife.
I would say the morels in your pics are perfect age for best taste. Smaller greys are just usually too small, and the bigger whitening and yellowing ones do not have as good of a taste.
I got about a week still(SE MN). Still am going to poke around later today to see if I can find some greys for supper.

Great, thanks for the responses. I just pan fried some up for a quick appetizer, and all I can say is holy shit are these things good. To think I've been walking right past them all these years, heh.

Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.
