Yeah those M. madisoniorum flowers look really beautiful. I'm mostly experienced in growing herbaceous plants but I wanna start getting into cacti & succulents to keep as houseplants, they seem pretty popular on here and not quite as fussy as the leafy stuff. I keep an aloe plant that I bought at a supermarket but that's it, my mother had a Christmas cactus when I was younger that died after a few years (she's horrible with plants).

Someone I know had what I'm pretty sure was a Mammillaria (they had no idea what it was) that had the most beautiful little red-violet flowers this past January. I also had no idea that lophs flowered until I saw pictures of them, kinda stupidly obvious that they must but I've never seen one IRL & I still didn't expect that such a tumerous looking plant would have such pretty little blooms.

Over all really good job Dan, they're all really nice:thumbup: Can't wait to see all the pictures that get put up here in EG as spring/summer comes into it's own.

Definitely excited to see the pictures this spring/summer!

I'm personally trying to get back into leafy plants, especially fruits and vegetables.

It will be far easier when I have a yard and more space though

Peyote was originally described by Spanish explorers/conquerors as a root and not a cactus at all!

Yeah. From what I gather peyote's apparently like mandrakes, more about root growth & seed production then the usual leaf/flesh growth. Isn't that why people usually graft them onto other succulents/rootstocks, so the fleshy parts grow more?

I read in another thread you've got lemon/bee balm growing (I'm assuming Melissa Officinalis), I always have that stuff around. It's awesome as tea and really good iced either alone or mixed w/ black. Plus bees like it and skeeters don't. If you put that stuff in the ground you'll have a shitload of it in no time. Most mints send out runners that send up a shoot every few inches and if a small piece of one stays in the ground it'll grow into a new plant. I keep mine in a tub sunk into the ground so it doesn't get invasive.

I'm moving to a new place so I gotta hold off on the fruits/veggies till we're settled but I wanna get more into fruits, I tend to keep mainly a vegetable garden though I don't know why. At the new place I wanna put in a fig tree, grape vines, and pick up one of those Meyer lemon hybrid trees that fruit up here (yeah, I'm a Guinea in case you couldn't tell by my fruit preferences). The only fruit I tend to grow just pop up on their own because I planted them once upon a time and they just started growing wild in the yard. Strawberries (these spread like a MF too), rasp/blackberries, ground cherries (Physalis Peruviana, I  Nightshades) are all really easy to cultivate. Strawberries and P. Peruviana do well in pots (those hanging strawberry planters are really cool to have), so do peppers and tomatoes.

I swear I'd live in a little rat's nest as long as I have space to grow stuff.

I do have both bee balm and lemon balm.

Bee balm makes a great euphoric tea, at least when I tried it a year or so ago.

It does have a bit of an odd taste/smell though.

OOOHHH! THAT bee balm, I was thinking of just lemon balm (Melissa means honeybee in Greek and they're crazy about that one too). That's what I was talking about using as tea, it's really relaxing when hot and refreshing iced.

I've grown the other one before mainly for it's flowers to attract neat garden critters (hummingbirds, bees, butterflies) and it worked out well. I've never had it in tea but I've tasted a couple of leaves before. It is really odd smelling/tasting though. It like a weird combination of citrus, pine, mint, and spice. Definitely complex. That might pop up again this year, I'll have to keep my eye out for it to see if I can get a shoot to take with me.

Oh, I mixed up a bee balm and mulungu tea the other night.

I was knocked out immediately :drooling:

Mondara sp. are certainly an interesting tea.

With lots of sugar I'd even say it makes a great desert tea of sorts, very sweet.

I had M. Fistulosa. I found it growing wild and took some pieces of rhizome home to plant and that's how I got it. Now I'm determined to find it this year and pot it up to bring it with me so I can try it as tea, I've read the Indians used it for all kinds of medicinal purposes but never tried it for myself other than tasting a couple of fresh leaves.

Never tried mulungu either, I've only heard of it recently and was told the effects were similar to kava kava. Would you say it's worth looking into?

DAMN! Up here in the North East my D. Metel just started sending up new shoots. I'm starting a couple more from seeds so I can do them in tubs. Beautiful.
