2010 Grow contest
    #11758617 -

First and foremost, Please Please PLEASE make a donation to the seed bank

Please feel free to add input/suggestions. Here is a rough idea of how it will work:

We'll all need the same type of seeds. I volunteer CactusDan to provide the seeds. A small entrance fee may be required for him to send them your way.

As soon as every person who wants to participate has their seeds, a date will be set to begin germination. Maximum amount of seeds per participant should be maxed out at 5, 10 if it's something notoriously known for difficult germination.

Goal one - first person to germinate their seeds (Prize = points to the seed bank maybe? Suggestions?)
Goal two - first person to produce fruit/mature flower (Prize = ???) If the winner of goal 1 is also the winner of goal 2, the next person to obtain mature flower gets the goal 2 prize. If this were the case winner 1 would gain extra street cred, but no additional prize.

Any suggestions on prizes? Just posting enough pictures and seeing how each person's plant progresses differently will be pretty cool, that's its own prize right there.

This brings us to what type of plant we're going to use. I'm thinking a type of fruit would be easiest. Plus, enough seeds would be simple enough to procure if it was a common fruit like a tomato or chili pepper or something.

Another good rule to have would be decent documentation. Average temperature, humidity, indoors/outdoors, lighting, etc. (thanks PoC)

Your finish lines suck,  First to germ? how about first to have a 4 tier dual axiom flower as the first finish line, and the second greatest "beauty" 1 month into flowering after 3 months in veg..  I still like your game, but finish line...

How about we have multiple goals, each with brilliant different prizes? That'd be sweet. One of the goals can be having a 4 tier dual axiom flower, or greatest beauty, etc.

Also, :fuckyou:

No need to be rude about it...

I would like to see some threads where two or more of us coordinate projects of this nature but with a non-competetive attitude.  I would love to see some decent documentation of environmental conditions such as light situation, temperature, and humidity.  Right now I could start some seeds, but they would definitely grow a lot slower considering the temperatures here.  It would just be fun to see the differences between environments I think.

I don't plan on being competitive about it either. I'm not going to do a wet paper towel germ tek, and use lights and humidity tents or anything like that. I'm just going to plop my seeds in soil outside and let it go. I think the prizes would give it a little extra excitement.

personally I think the plant should be something like a chili plant as its easy to get a lot of viable plants from a single source to even the playing field.

I dont think germination is a good goal, first to set flower, first to go from green to fully red in the case of a chili....

It also should be a plant that is tolerant to being grown indoors, under lights, outside, in a greenhouse etc so everyone worldwide has a fair shot. Again, Chili plants seem to fit this perfectly.

If someone were to goto their local store and buy a large pack of hot chilies and seed them we could get this off the ground right away!!

I have chilies on the brain right now as I put loads of seeds in to germinate a few days ago and have a mixed bag of really hot chili seeds on their way..

I was thinking first person to see corking/scarring on their chili pepper.

I went to Henry's yesterday to look at their chili pepper seeds. The only ones they had were jalapeño, serranos, and two California sweet ones. Jalapeños are quite common, and may be our best bet

I think it'd be good if we could use donated seed from the seed bank so we all have the same genetics to work with.  Chillies seem good but I'd also like some other more exotic things to grow.  Echinacea sounds good to me, and I think other perennials should be considered as well.  If I settled with a member on something to grow, I'd be willing to buy some seeds and send the person some.

I like the idea of fruit/vegetable grow contests, but do agree it needs to get warmer.

We'll need to take a bit longer to hammer out the details and figure out prizes.

I might ask for an nominal entrance fee, just so that it isn't me paying out of pocket for all the prizes.

It would also cover seed shipping too.

I'd be willing to do go along with that especially since I just sent 100 mg seeds to the seedbank last week, Id happily make up the rest of the required stock from what I have left.

You would have to separate this to indoor and outdoor grows as they are completely different kettles of fishies

I personally like the idea of peppers/small vegetables as they are:

Easily grown indoors.

Decently compact.

Definitely show their colors depending on how well they're taken care of.

And lastly you get foodz!

The Echinacea purpurea sounds good too!

I have some growing atm.
