Grow log! taking my virginity- EQ,GT (first flush pics!) 6/1
    #12296576 -

Auto-Summary
This forum post details the author's first mushroom growing experience. The author ordered spore syringes and followed a tek (technique) to grow Golden Teachers using WBS (potting mix). The process involved germination, pressure cooking, and inoculation of jars, followed by waiting for colonization. The author shares pictures of their growing progress, including the first signs of mycelium and pinning. After a week, they harvested their first flush, documenting the results and sharing their experience. Overall, the post provides a comprehensive account of the author's mushroom growing journey and the results achieved.

Hello Shroomery! finally after tons of time of doing research, finding a spore source, pming experienced growers and gathering materials, I am ready to do my first grow.

I am growing with my friend. First off I have always had an extreme love for mushrooms, have always felt that using the magic mushies responsibly was a great way to keep you thinking about the beauty in life and has definatly shaped who I am today..

anyways...

I ordered 3 spore syringes, Equador,Goldenteachers, and Koh Samui and after a good two or three week wait, they arrived. I kept on switching back and fourth from pf cakes, to WBS, to rye, and finally after muchh review I decided to use WBS.

March 29th

I go to ralphs and pick up 12 1qt. ball canning jars for 16 dollars.I also buy some bleach spray, then head over to whole foods. They were completely out of all rye grain, so I went to the coffee shop inside and got a buttload of spent coffee grounds. On the way to my friends house, i get some tyvek from the post office and a 16 pound bag of WBS from the pet store.

I will be following the Doc t's wild bird seed tek.

1.)We measure out the WBS into the jars, a little over half way in each one.
Then we pore it out jar by jar into a strainer, and rinse the fuck outta it.

Then we load it into a big ass pot, submerge the seeds in water then scoop out about 90% of the floaters, didnt bother to get them all because i have read from some people this step is unnessacery.

2.) We load up all of the jars a little of over half way with the rinsed and "de-floatered" WBS, then fill them up with water an inch or two above the top of the seeds.
We put this away to germinate overnight

Tomorrow i go get the pressure cooker from sears, hope i can get a good one for 60 dollars!!

any tips are gladly appreciated, will be uploading pics soon

March 30

Got my pressure cooker!! It is an 8qt presto one, new from sears

We take all the soaked WBS, and put it into a big pot and simmer it for 30 minutes. We then rinse the WBS throughly, and load up each of the jars about 2/3rds, some more , some less.
We have an 8 quart pressure cooker but it was a pain in the ass to find a way to get 3 of our quarts in there. We only had enough time to get 3 jars pressure cooked, which we did at 15 psi for 70 minutes.

We are now waiting for the jars to cool, then inoculate. Hoping do PC and inoc another 6 jars tomorrow:syringe:

Its such a trip actually doing all of the stuff that we have been reading about for what seems like forever

April 6th!

K, so taking the advice of the people on here, i did not inoculate with my prepared substrate.

What i did was i brought all my stuff up to my friends house, dumped out alll of the WBS in a big strainer, 1/3 at a time. We rinsed then drained the living fuck outta the WBS, but it was still pretty wet, so i put it in the oven on a cookie sheet at 195 degrees for 7-10 to minute intervals, constantly stirring till i believed i had the perfect moisture content.
I read a post of some guy doing this to his wbs and had amazing results, so im straying from what my tek says to do exactly but im not skipping any steps, just simply enhancing them.

After this i reloaded all of the jars 2/3rds full with WBS, and was only able to pressure cook 2 jars at a time (even though i have an 8 qt cooker!?!?), so by the end of the day i was able to cook 4 jars at 15psi for 77 minutes.

At the end of the night the first jars i had cooked were at room temp. then we put them in the fridge for 10 minutes and proceeded to inoculate.

We sprayed the fuck down outta his bathroom with 1/10 bleach spray, we let it sit, then entered the bathrom with the 2 cooled down jars. We assembled the needle, and lit the end half of the needle till it was red hot, it was then wiped down with a bleach spray soaked towell, then inoculated into one of the holes on top through a bleach spray soaked paper towell. It was then immediately covered by a sterile bandaid and recovered with aluminum foil.

I now have 2 inoculated jars, hopefully going to do the other two soon and pressure cook the rest.

Golden Teachers #1 and #2 are inoculated.

April 13th

I have not seen the jars since i inoc'ed 2 of them up. Today i went and looked and there are no signs of growth. Some of the seeds are in little clusters and it looks like something white is holding them together but i cannot tell cause the jar is blurry.

But, no harm because as far as i can see there is no contam's either, so I'm just gona lay back and let time take its course.

Butt since we did have the other two jars that we pressure cooked and sealed a week ago, we did inoc those with the EQ syringe. Shook it up real well, sprayed down the bathroom, got the needle red, wiped it down then shot up the jars through an alcohol soaked towlette.

Hoping these EQ get going a little faster then my GT's!

April 17th

Saturday night, we have confirmed mic! little spots of it on both of the Golden teacher jars, wayy more on GT#1 then GT#2. WOOOO HOOOO I am going to get pictures up soon, sorry for the lag i have to borrow a digital camera from someone

Nothin on the EQ's yet but it is all good:]

April 25th

So we went and took pictures today after shaking the jars. This is what we see

Golden Teacher #1 inoced on april 6th

...

Golden Teacher #2inoculated on april 6

Equador #1inoced on april 15th

Equador #2 Inoculated on april 15th

Woo hoo! see that growth?? i have offically grown psilocybin. I dont know why there is that much of a difference, they were done the exact same way with the same syringes and are kept in the same place.

May 1st

So after a pretty long wait we decided to smoke a blunt and check out the little guys, boy were we fucking stoked.

Check out the growth on GT1 and EQ2, they are both about 100% on the outside, thick with beautiful pearly white mycellium.

Check out these pictures!!

BTW GT#2 is coming along great, i accidently shook it before we could take a picture but it was about 15-20 percent colonized, sounds a little slow considering we innoc'ed a month ago but every time we look at it the myc spots have doubled, so we are just gunna wait it out.

Golden teacher #1![/color]

Aint she pretty? almost a full month after inoculation and she is finally 100%, these babies are gunna be beauties.

Equador # 2

Man these things are fast colonizers, we inoc'ed this one over a week after GT#1 but it beat it to 100# colonization

Equador # 1

Im very pleased with this little guy, seemed like he was dying out after we didnt see anything for a good week and a half, but this one is coming along super fast now. every time we look at it the myc spots double in size, and now look at it.

Our plan is that once the two jars are fully colonized, we are going to stall them until the other two catch up, thus allowing us to make decent monotubs:]]

any thoughts? please leave feedback

May 7th

We looked at the differences in the percentage of jar colonization between the two GT jars and decided to fruit one of them now in a mini dubtub and one later via the same method

So we took our coir, put one fourth of a brick in a bucket, then took our verm, put about a quart into a bucket, then threw in 2 quarts boiling water. Let it sit for 30 mins, stirred everything up real well, then let it sit for 4 hours.

Came back and mixed in our jar of WBS (GT#1) evenly through the coir. put a layer of aluminum foil on top with holes covered by tyvek (didnt have micropore tape) and put in a dark warm place.

Hoping everything works out well, so happy to be on next phase of growing!

EQ#1 too finish up so we can make a bigger dubtub.

The two jars that haven't finished are both around 90% done, the bottom half of both are fully condensed and the top halves are virtually covered with mycelium, although not one single piece.

May 11th

WOOHOO!

Took the two equador jars, they were definatly 100% done, and made another dubtub with them.

this time i took 3/4ths of a brick of coir, mixed with a quart of verm. added boiling water and let sit for 3 hours.

Then i drained it to field capacity and put it into my tub. Then added most of my spawn, mixed it all up real nice and well, then added a small layer on top for contam protection!

gona get some pics up soon of my tubs.

btw the golden teacher tub is coming along great, probably 20% colonized on top already

May 24th

checked both of the tubs today. everything is looking great, managed to take some pictures, check them out!

May 26th

ohhhh damn. so yesterday the 25th, i looked at the golden teacher dubtub. Upon closer inspection i saw pins! 9 of them to be excact, they were all growing on the sides! i was so happy to see pins, but not so happy that they were on the sides.

now, today i look and i can count 27 good size pins growing on the sides and another 20 more that are just starting to form.

its a fucking lot of pins but not where i wanted them! so on friday i am going to stick it in the fruiting chamber and put some wax paper on top and hope they start pinning from the top of my bulk sub.

btw i started golden teacher #2's dubtub today. lookin great

---------------June 1st, harvest day-------------

exactly one week ago we saw pins, and today we harvested our first flush, fucking awesome experience. Sad to see these little beauties go but we are ready for another flush:]

saturday may 30th

first flush pics

Sooo nice! look at that fat stack of aborts in the picture above, that wasnt even all of them. these things are so beautiful:]

This last picture above is the total first flush minus the aborts off one of our 2 golden teacher tubs, it was made with 1 qt. of colonized WBS, mixed with 1/3rd brick of coir and a half quart of vermiculite. It started pinning at like 80% colonization, so we did not case it. lots of side pins but no big deal

I got a spore print waiting for the first person to guess the dry weight of the first flush, minus the aborts

----UPDATE! TRIP REPORT----

Today, me and two buddies tripped on these golden teachers, we all ate probably upwards up 4.5 grams dry, and tripped nuts at venice beach. It was a mellower trip like ive read the golden teachers, but once we smoked a blunt shit hit the fan

so worth it ! damn it was such a nice feeling

being your first attempt, i would leave the coffee out, get your feet wet first, coffee just add's another chance to contam..now while soaking your wbs you can use half coffee water..

also i myself find to simmer the wbs for 20-25 minutes after you soak it gets it about perfect moisture content..

and you should be able to get a decent PC for 60 bucks..

btw, good job on reading and getting a game plan before jumping in before learning how to swim..

yes you can use it in your substrate, like i said it just add's more of a chance to contam...coir/verm is pretty contam resistant and works wonders...its almost impossible to mess up using just coir, with some verm lol

also I use 4-6 quart jars spawned to 64quart monotub's.

Mkk thanks for the tip about the simmering for 25 minutes, and thats great because we originally planned to do 64qt monotubs but i didnt think id have enough spawn,

i wish there was a way to give back to shroomery, this place is insane

i wouldnt save cofee grounds for more than a day. I try to only use coffe grounds made the morning of the procedure if i am going to use them, because i have had them mold more than once when saving them for soil amendments. (the sooner you use the wet coffe the less chance contams have to germinate)

let me add that this is because coir has fibre cells with walls made of cellulose. anything cellulose is good against contams. cellulose is the main component of wood and cotton fibers.

Have you ever worked with wood chips in a wannabe sterile environment:wink:. It's more than likely, that it'll turn into every color of the rainbow in no time.

Trichoderma and Botrytis love cellulose!

This is actually one reason, why potting soils, that often contain small pieces of wood chips, are not really good to use. The wood chips are a magnet for Trich.

but isnt that one of the reason why they are good?

Not for colonizing but to attract the bacteria that are in the area and keep it away from other surfaces?

So itd be good to have something with cellulose on the floor (since thats where 80% of airborne contaminates are)

So I guess my last post didnt make sense, but I was under the impression cellulose inhibits the growth of bacteria also.

Bacteria isn't a matter of bulk substrates. In fact, some bacteria is required for proper growth.

The reason why most mold spores are on the floor is gravity.

proper growth of what? myc?

is trichoderma or botrytis harmful or helpful bacteria?

was I right to say that cellulose inhibits growth of some bacteria?

facts are: woods main components is cellulose

which attracts, and inhibit growth of bacteria.

Which is probably why in a wanna be sterile environment. everything else is cleaned of bacteria and it all goes to the wood, causing it to have A LOT of mold.

Trich and Borytis are molds, not bacteria.
And Boryitis is indeed harmful. Just as Geroge Castanza about:awesomenod:

And yes, there are wood inhibiting bacteria, that work hand in hand with fungi to decompose woods.

This is no phenomenon of wood, but of pretty much all sterilized substrates.
When you sterilize substrates and kill off most contaminants as well as favorable bacteria, such as
Actinomyces, and then put it to a non-sterile environment, the substrate is an invite for contams.
Which is why you pasteurize, to let thermophilic bacteria (that can be either mushroom food also) etc. thrive and also occupy the substrate so mold spores have a hard time to germinate and grow.

You'll see, that when you work with wood chips for example, in the right conditions (that we need to properly cultivate mushroom mycelium), it'll turn colorful (because of molds) in no time.

I think you are missing the point of how "contamination" in general. Cantams do not think, nor they decide where to migrate? They just are. If they are on the surface which is acceptable for growing/incubation it will grow there, if there isn't it wont.

Contams (spores or bacteria) do not just pack things and go where its better/warmer. The only way it can "travel" is just by rapidly multiplying over the damp surface and thus contaminating whole area where it can grow (given its not occupied by something else)

I thought about mentioning this, but I assumed that was common sense (without any kind of offense to you iamu:thumbup:).

Thanks for making that clear again.

Yes you can. Though in general I have found most effective not to treat wood at all, but just provide enough FAE and limited temperature to prevent molds.
This has at least have the biggest success rates in my personal experience.

Sooo I forgot to add this

After pressure cooking the jars there is moisture present between the seeds, but there is no standing water at the bottom, i still think i did not dry it enough after the final rinse, i just let the water run then put it in the jars and forced the droplets out through the two holes on the lid by turning it upside down and repeatedly smacking the bottom of it
Should i just inoculate these tomorrow since they are already sterilized and hope for the best? what are the consequences of having too much water in your substrate?
