- I've never used a drip shield with perlite and have had no problems at all.

- You'd have to tell us the dimensions of the bottom for anyone to be able to tell you how many cakes would fit. Figure about 5-6 inches square for each cake.

- Perlite has no smell and doesn't wander around so I can't see how it would "escape" and give your grow away. Watch out for the vermiculite though it likes to sneak out and squeal to the cops every chance it gets

- On a PF cake a lid not fully tightened will give you plenty of air exchange

Even with perlite, I never have moisture condensing on the top of my fruiting chamber, therefore I don't use a drip shield. Try it without, and if you have any problems, then use the drip shield.

Perlite works good, just pour it into your terrarium slow, and you probably wont be able to pour the whole bag in at once cause it kicks up a enormous white cloud, which is VERY harmful to breath. Happy trails

i read from several sources that perlite was extremely messy

Lots of people just dump the damp perlite into the bottom of the fruiting chamber which is messy and a pain to clean & replace. I have found that putting the perlite in shallow tubs placed inside the fruiting chamber is much more convenient amd keeps up humidity just as well.
