vermiculite. where did it go?

Okay, this is really embarassing. I'm not even a newbie (first grew in '96).
I can't find vermiculite locally anymore. I've looked EVERYWHERE. Just yesterday tried KMart (they used to have it), Walmart (perlite, no vermiculite), Home Depot (same as walmart), Sears (nothin), Menards (nope), and a few other places that have garden departments. Its like nobody stocks it anymore.
Does anybody know of common stores that carry it? I'd prefer not to mail order for the stuff (just because it bothers me to order bulky, cheap stuff that I should be able to pickup), but will resort to that if I must (best place to order from?).
Its the prime garden/yard season and I'm kinda irritated that I've been looking for this for so long without luck. Is there a reason its not sold as much anymore (another asbestos scare?)?
Thanks

Did you try lowes? I saw some there the other day. It wasn't on the shelf, but they had it. There was a place for it with a price and everything, but it was empty. And I saw a big box labeled vermiculite way up on a shelf above where it should have been.
I was just looking at the time, or I would have had them get it down for me.

I know that Home Depot carries it......the employees are dumb.
go take a look around in the garden section.
They have 4 sq foot bags of verm sometimes.....and the smaller bags.
The larger bags are usually outside in the racks.
Hardware stores carry it......Try a True Value hardware store.....great people.
If they don't have it in stock.....they will order it in for you.
Fred Meyers carries Verm...small bags for $3.99
Check Nurseries in your area.....they most likely will have some...usually more expensive.
You can also find it online.....if you really can't find it locally.
good luck!

Vermiculite may be a thing of the past, Heres the tale...
Finally got off my arse and decided to grow my first batch of Mother Natures Finest (PF-Tek), gathered up part of the supplies, but the local Wally Werld was out of vermiculite. The woman working there suggested a local farm supply saying she just bought some on sale their...
At the Farm Supply they couldn't find any so they called the Manager who informed me that he was told that vermiculite was no longer being produced because of some kind of suspected health problem (Lung Related). Hmmmmm.
So I made a trip to 2 other towns and both of their Super WWs were out, and didn't even have shelf space allocated for it anymore (I also checked in the seperate flower sections at the stores that had them) and the sales people admitted they used to carry it.
Draw your own conclusions, but here I sit with a load of fixins and no vermiculite after spending 5 hours rounding up stuff.

My local nursery has vermiculite 365 days a year, I can't believe that vermiculite has become this difficult to find.

Several years ago there was a Verm mine that had Asbestos in it.
So there was a scare about Asbestos in Verm.....this matter has been cleared up.
Yet many places still think that there is Asbestos in Verm.
Which is totally incorrect.....blahhhhh
Urban Legends..... I swear !!!!
Glad my Home Depot carries the 4 square foot bags.....think I will start selling them to you people that can't find the stuff!!!!
One huge bag will last over 6 months.
Coming soon...Roadkill's Verm Store

WW may just be doing another Inventory reevaluation, if something doesn't fly off the shelf, remove or replace it.
The Farm Supply might be just covering their Asses, too many peoples sue happy.
I grabbed 6 8qt bags at Lowes yesterday afternoon and that only left 3 on the shelf. In any case its not a bad idea to have some extra.

Thanks everyone. I'm glad someone else could back me up on it being hard to find.
Its a bit strange that some home depots, kmarts stock it but not mine. I thought perlite and vermiculite went hand in hand. Not anymore.
I guess I'll try to find a couple more stores that may have it. I should have stocked up on it before when I could have.
