hey guys, first i must say after a fellow member told me about this site ive been hooked since:syringe:

i live in newzealand and its now autuam:sad:, now im just wondering whats the best thing to do with my peyotes and grafts. it gets lower than 0C degrees here. last winter i brounght them in and stupid me still watered a little over winter and got some streaching on some:sad:. whats the best way to aviod this, my house will be super warm as i got a large fire and wont drop below 20c. if i stop watering and leave them in the window sill with no direct sunlight will this be ok?? or can they handle sunlight when dormant? or will they handle the cold outside? my sanpedros can handle it??

oh and heaps of pics of course, we had a pretty good season here: edit dam most of my pics are 5mb+ ill have to update later, any one know a easy way to make them smaller??

i have heaps of other ethnos, kanna khat sinica bragumisa and heaps of other cacti

lot of question but i can help.
first water the least you can when you bring them inside. they go dormant and really don't need any water. my lophs can handle about 36f for a couple of hours with minor damage. you can leave them next to a windo and they should be fine.

don't stress too much about it because they are pretty hardy specimens.

much more than that man, they are on there own.

ok so the shortend daylight(winter) and lack of water will insure theyll go dormant then? even tho it will be nice and toasty warm inside?? also theyve been outside in my greenhouse over summer and get a very slightly filtered sunlight(basicly direct), can they get sun on them for a few hours a day when dormant through the window?

sorry for all the Q just my first graft streached heaps and now i have another 3 that look great but im paranoid coming into winter

thanks for your help, oh any tips on easily resizing my pics, im itching to share....

oh and any idea why as soon as the graft takes with these they start pushing out pups every were? the nongrafted ones havnt puped. you can see the streached one in pic3 i have removed probly 10 pups this summer. i would like one big fat one preferbly

Trichocereus is a large, soil hungry cactus. Lophs on the otherhand just mind their own bussiness for a few decades.


The loph has no choice but to pup, The trich stock takes up far too many nutrients for it.  PS  Beware of overwatering. That little guy could pop like a grape.

lol yeah ive already worried about that, about a month after the graft took i was super worried cos it look like it was going to pop and didnt water for agaes

Nice collection of plants and well done on the grafts. Are you in the North Island?
As for making buttons dormant, they usually do it themselves but you can help them by restricting water so they can prepare for the coming cold months. Be careful leaving them in the windowsill when temps are low. The temperatures around windowsills can get just as cold, if not colder than what it is outside and inadequate airflow can cause problems. They should be ok in that position but just keep these things in mind. Surprises suck!

thanks karode, no im in the top of the south usaly get frezzing cold but the winter peak is only around 3-4weeks.

i will sit them ontop of my fish tank i think which is beside a big window with no directsun and wont get cold.

thats my baby oscar his mate is fully grown and is a black tiger oscar, theyr coolest fish ever and would recomend them to anyone looking at having a fishtank. these two live in 450l tank with a few smaller mates:smile:
