WWII Iwo Jima Photograph
    #12106158 -

Chet Foulke, USMC (my step-dad),  was one of the original Iwo Jima marines that raised the flag. The famous photo was a recreation as the original flag was quite tiny and no news correspondent was nearby for a snapshot. The second raising was done with a much larger flag at the orders of a rear-echelon general. When my step dad was asked to pose for the re-enactment, he said, "No, it is too risky! There are still snipers around and the island is not yet secured."

Of the second group of six (none of the originals), three were killed within three days. The others became quite famous for one of America's most revered (and recreated) photographs.

I brought this up because of the currently-aired History Channel's award-winning documentary: World War II in HD.

Philosophical topics: bravery, self-sacrifice, rewriting history, illusion and :blah:

Explain why I was scared? A great white surfaced about 18 foot away and was checking me out. I could not see how long he was, but the dorsal fin was about 32" high putting him at about 14-16 feet.

What was worse was when he submerged. I kept expecting him to rush from below and knock me over. Needless to say, I stopped paddling for about 40 minutes and just drifted, then paddled like a maniac for shore.

There was a guy years ago that kayaked the entire California coast. He was attacked twice and survived unhurt both times.

I think my heart would just sieze.

Being on the ocean in a kayak is a little intimidating as it is. Especially in the north where the water is so cold you die in minutes.

But a shark is like a grizzly bear to me. Beyond scary.

I would NOT wanna mess with a fuckin' grizzly bear.  But isn't the polar bear supposed to be more vicious?

A 400 pound griz and a 400 pound shark in 2 feet of water in a pool. Who wins?

In two foot of water I'll put my money on the griz. In four or five foot it would be all shark.

Polar bears are not as aggressive as grizzlies (when not hunting), but are 25-30% larger on average.

Saw a show once where some do-gooders adopted an orphaned polar bear. They raised it from a cub and when it was like 6 months old and around 200 pounds and cute as could be - until it freaked out and tore up its handlers.
