Re: Honor Me Today [Re: Swami]

Been a while since I posted but felt compelled to......I am a veteran as well. I went to the Gulf and to Kosovo. I don't feel any more veteran-ish than the recruiter who got to stay behind. We all served in our own ways. Some were asked to sacrifice more than others. Someone asked "if you didn't fight in the war...why should I honor you?" The sailors on the USS Cole were not in war either but they gave their lives for their country. The reason you should honor your vets is because of the daily risk they are at that we forget about when it is "peace" time.

Some took issue with the fact that Swami appeared to be egocentric with the statement "honor me". Even if this was his true intent (which he stated it wasn't) it doesn't negate the gift he gave his country. If someone gives you a thousand dollars and tells you how great he is while handing it to you......has the thousand dollars depreciated?

People rant and rave about the attrocities of war and the infidel U.S.A. I too am a huge peace advocate but I am a realist and you are naive to believe that war is never necessary on this planet (there will always be oppressive lunatics seeking power). Because war is necessary at times, I choose to thank those who protected my butt.....I repayed them by reciprocating.

THANKS SWAMI.........cook, commando, postal clerk, electronics tech., ALL......THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As I've already pointed out, there was no need. I said "most" not "all".

so you did, i stand corrected

I just havn't seen you attack Swami lately for his hostility..maybe I missed it when you did that

Perhaps my personal attacks on Swami are so vitriolic that i must deliver them via PM as that kind of vindictive venom has no place on a public message board....

If the cap fits...

it doesn't

Damn dude! Swami has my utmost respect for serving. If you're in the military, you risk your life, period. Because once you're in, in can't quit until your commitment is up, and you never know what will happen before then.
If you're against what happened in Vietnam, you should never blame a soldier. They had nothing to do with the decision to fight in Vietnam. That decision was made entirely by our civilian politicians. So blame the people that voted them into office.

Thanks Swami! I salute you (and all veterans on these boards or anywhere else).

Yes, and they're usually the guys in charge of our country.

"Please pardon my seeming lack of sensitivty to rememberance day here Mr. Mushrooms, but........is Jane Fonda really no longer here amongst the "living"? "

Just because she is alive is no reason not to honor her.  Besides, no mention of Vietnam would be complete without at least a mention of "Hanoi Jane".

What a gal. :smirk:

Cheers,

I respect you for that. I was 'groomed' for military conduct in physical education classes from 1965-1971, with close order drill and such. My number came up in 1972, on the radio lottery - 179 - half-way through the year. The following year, my birthday came up Number1 !!! Nixon was pulling out the ground troops and stepping up the bombing. Although my 1H status became 1A, I was never called, though through indoctrination, I thought it would be like really rough Boy Scout Camp. I would've gone. I mean, I had no thought for conscientious objector, or running to Canada. I thank God that I wasn't called, but I respect anyone who was called and went, so happy belated Veteran's Day.

Thanks for the update, Mr. Shrooms, believe it or not the message boards here at ye olde Shroomery are my only contact with the "real world"(a scary thought, i know  ) but yes....i can still see a picture of Jane emblazoned in my brain with her right hand crossed over her heart from a Rolling Stone NEWSPAPER circa 70/71(B4 it became just another "glossy") 50 cents, then it went through the ceiling and cost 60 cents!!! man, you guyz are in DEEP doo doo if/ when i get me a scanner

Not a problem Freak.

This is your only source?  Wow, that's a sword that cuts both ways.  Trust me, there are things afoot you wouldn't want to know about.

Yeah, I remember that issue too!  LOL  Those were good days.  I was a regular purchaser of Rolling Stone, Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers, and Creem.  I was actually going through the attic last night and came upon the Dr. Hook and company's "cover issue"!

I think the last one I bought was the Lennon issue.

You're right, it went waaaaaay down hill. :frown:

Remember Soft Machine?  How about "The big floppy boot stomps down"?  Atomic Rooster?  Good bands, great times.  I turned 18 watching Pink Floyd do a concert at Kent State!  Kent State?  Yeah, not all those days were good.  I live not too far from Kent and knew people involved in the whole mess.

"Attica Attica Attica Attica!!!"

"One two three four we don't want your fucking war!" [thrown in so the post isn't too far off the topic (Swami hates that  ) ]

hey man! i think the issue with mizz Fonda to which you refer had sort of a golden trim, as far as the Dr. Hook issue, that would be circe March/April of 73(i still have about 100 old issues packed away somewhere)

soft machine with robert wyatt(B4 his accident) John marshall etc.....lol who could(or would want to) 4 get?

Atomic rooster! say no more about that wonderful band with Vincent Crane(key board player form Arthur Brown's amazing "Fire" album).......good stuff indeed my friend

I just got chills.  Yes, the Hook issue was March 29, 1973!  Woah, do you have a memory or what?!?!  [must not have taken the drugs I did]  Rmember too that that 'Stone" didn't put the name of the band.  They just said, "You know who"

YES!  Vincent Crane AND Carl Palmer BEFORE ELP.  Remember Atomic Rooster changed members on every album.

We ought to get the old foggies like ourselves for a discussion in Chill Out.  It would be a blast!

Yes, the Fonda issue has golden trim.

Yeah Neil was definitely cool!

But remember these words of "Chicago"!

I can't hear them without getting all fired up!

Can't stand it no more
The people dying
Crying for help for so many years
But nobody hears
Better end soon my friend
It better end soon my friend

Can't take it no more
The people hating
Hurting their brothers
They don't understand
They can't understand
Better end soon my friend
It better end soon

Hey, everybody
Won't you just look around
Can't anybody see?
Just what's going down
Can't you take the time?
Just to feel
Just to feel what is real
If you do
Then you'll see that we got a raw deal
They're killing everybody
I wish it weren't true
They say we got to make war
Or the economy will fall
But if we don't stop
We won't be around no more
They're ruining this world
For you and me
The big heads of state
Won't let us be free
They made the rules once
But it didn't work out
Now we must try again
Before they kill us off
No more dying!
No more killing
No more dying
No more fighting
We don't want to die
No, we don't want to die
Please let's change it all
Please let's make it all
Good for the present
And better for the future
Let's just love one another
Let's show peace for each other
We can make it happen
Let's just make it happen
We can change this world
Please let's change this world
Please let's make it happen for our children
For our women
Change the world
Please make it happen
Come on
Come on
Please
Come on
It's up to me
It's up to you
So let's do it now
Yeah
Do it now

Can't stand it no more
The people cheating
Burning each other
They know it ain't right
How can it be right
Better end soon my friend
It better end soon my friend

Wow..........

Flashes Peace Sign

Interesting story, thanks. Cancer at 17?!

1968, 10th grade, and nervously telling my biology teacher Mrs. Gould, that the reason I was at the movies to see Jane Fonda as Barbarella, was because of the interesting biology! What a dork I was.

Thanks for the lyrics Mr. Shrooms.....i know it's not from the 1st Chicago album(transit authority) or the 2nd......i'm gonna guess the 3rd, there was one amazing song on that(imo) called "I just wanna be free"......unfortuantely, due to my psycho-illogistical temperment, that's the only line i remember.......but just reading the lyrics you posted, me detects a definitive Terry Kath(guitarist/singer) vibe.....i never actually owned(owned: WHAT a concept! lol) the 3rd......although i did trade an old copy of the first zeppelin and a british "best hits of the floyd" for "Billion dollar babies(alice cooper) and chicago 4(hit single: saturday in the park).....Chicago relly did have some nice lyrics........thanks for posting some of their best

If we burn our wings
Flying too close to the sun
If the moment of glory
Is over before it's begun
If the dream is won
Though everything is lost
We will pay the price,
But we will not count the cost
