ac adapter/ mp3 player

do they make adapters for your mp3 player so you can listen to your mp3 player in the car?

i have a fucked factory car stero in my 99' ford and its gonna cost me 350+ bucks to install shit. there has got to be a cheaper way. all i want to do is listen to my mp3. oh, i dont have a tape deck either. its just the radio.

An ac adapter allows you to plug your MP3 player into an AC power source like that in your house.  It wont help you plug it into your car.

To power your MP3 player in your car you need a DC adapter, they are cheap on ebay.  To listen to your MP3 player in your car you have three options basically - one is a tape player adapter which you dont have.  Another is an over the air FM broadcaster which can be hit or miss (actually I think they are more miss than hit).  The third and best option is to hard wire your MP3 player into your stereo using an audio in jack.  Nearly all aftermarket stereo's have one, either for MP3 players or disc changers.  Since you have a crappy factory stereo its likely you have no such input which leaves over the air FM broadcaster as your only option.

$350 bucks? Just find a used aftermarket deck with a axillary input on craigslist or ebay for $75-100 and install it yourself for another $20.

I just put a nice 2 year old Pioneer w/ aux input in my Bronco for $80 + a $10 wire harness adapter.

My last deck was 140$ from wal mart Dual bluetooth 200 watt RMS with Usb and aux input.

Fairly easy to install. works well

Or you could invest in a 20$ radio transmitter for your car.


Though IMO they got shitty sound.

Those RF transmitters have HORRIBLE quality and lots of interference. IMO not worth the money, but if that's all you can afford then that's all you can afford.

If you had a cassette player then it would be as simple as getting a cassette adapter from radio shack for $10 and the sound quality isn't too bad for the price.

Those RF adapters are really awful IMO. Sound quality is only as good as radio quality can be and often times is worse. You get all sorts of interference from power lines and other stuff. You'll probably get more frustrated with it than anything.

And those RF adapters can sometimes be upwards of $40-50, so they aren't exactly cheap.

For the cost/quality ratio I'd recommend finding a cheap used deck with an aux-in. They are dead simple to install, takes about 20-30 minutes.

OP, try to get your hands on a bracket that allows you to install any standard ISO car radio. I'm not sure what they cost new, but it should be possible to get one used as well. It's the easiest way to get good sound for a reasonable price tag in your car.

I agree they are simple to install.  But alot of people get intimidated by taking apart part of their dash and then coping with a dozen different colored wires.  Not everybody is able or willing to do such a thing.

and a ford standard to DIM (i think thats what is it)
Wireing harness should be like 5 bucks

you guys have any links to a howto for installing a headunit? ive got one laying around and want to put it in.

also to the RP, the FM transmitters work well if you take your cars antennea off.

without an antennea it will only be able to pickup short wave transmissions (like the FM transmitter) reliably. the commercial radio stations wont have as good reception so there will be less "competition" between the two.

What kind of car do you have? Lots of times the hardest part about stereo installation is having to take apart part of the dash to gain access to it. After that it's splicing wire harnesses together and putting everything back together.
